3 Seasonal Uses for Non-Working Fireplaces

So, your apartment has a decorative fireplace. But what good is it when the cold weather comes around and you can't build a fire? Well, the fireplace can still keep things looking warm and cozy during the fall and winter seasons...

1 Use it as a cornucopia of seasonal decor, as with these Halloween pumpkins from Good Housekeeping
2 Fill it with firewood, which is readily available this time of year and hearkens back to the fireplace's original function. Image: Country Homes & Interiors via House to Home
3 Make it glow with a strand of twinkle lights or candles, as in this example from Sunset.

Storing wood in a non-working fireplace seems a little silly.

Maybe trying to dry out the wood before it gets cold enough to use the fireplace? I love the pumpkins. There's something very comical about the way they're spilling out. I never thought to paint a pumpkin either.

Stacking wood in a fireplace was a total "aha!" for me, so thanks! I've seen stacked wood in kind of a "ready, set, fake" look in a non-working one...but never as chock-a-block storage. (We have 2 that work and are in adjoining rooms, mere steps apart. We tend to use just one and I can't believe I never thought of the empty gaping hole of the other one as a place to store the wood!)

There's a non-working fireplace in our apartment that is sealed up, so I can't put anything IN it. I've seen the idea of wrapping some logs in christmas lights, which is awesome... but what else could I do?

What about making a fireplace working again? What are the options for that? Are vent-free gas logs a good option?

Oh boy I wasn't aware of all the fun things you could do with a non-working fireplace! about to move into a place with one and was very disappointed to find out it's not non-working. then again I spose that's a reason why fire escapes are still so popular...

Fireplaces! Yeah, let's pretend that we are 16th century English gentleman, and fill our lungs with good old fashioned soot!
In Montreal, burning wood was recently banned in some areas because of dangerously high pollution levels - outdoors. 90% of the heat goes up the chimney - inneffecient too, unless you life in a forest in northern Maine.
But some of the old fireplaces are lovely. The new ones just represent contracters reflecting petit bourgeois taste.

Really, nasty comments aren't necessary. This article isn't about burning wood, it's about decorating, and rudeness isn't called for.
My non-functioning fireplace is gas fireplace that just doesn't work and I don't really care about fixing. I live in CA so it's not like I really need it for warmth (it's also in the same room as the thermostat, which some genius decided to install on the back of the double oven) We've put a nice screen in front of it and the ceramic log and have a rotating seasonal display that goes there. Right now it's pumpkins, later it will be stockings and creche scenes (with nearly 40 it's hard to find places to display them all) In the warm months the dog and cat both love to sleep on the stone hearth as it's the coolest place in the house.
