4 Small Space Solutions from Sweden

1021_solution1.jpg

Browsing through the Swedish interiors blog, In My Carport, we came across four small space solutions that address issues we've had in our own small home. As you may share some of these issues, we wanted to share the solutions with you here: starting with a cozy reading nook created in an open space. If you have a studio and dream of a private alcove escape, just make one, right in the middle of the room...

This cushy seat is made private by a surround of gauzy fabric. It instantly creates a "reading nook" of sorts even for those without an architectural nook.

Solution 2: The cabinet at the end of the dining table shown above is a small space solution we will be implementing ourselves. We have a similarly arranged dining table with one end up against a wall (no room to float). The addition of this glass-fronted storage cabinet at the end of the table is an efficient way to add a little dish storage where the end of the table meets the wall.

Solution 3: Open shelving. The open shelves in the kitchen above are visually much lighter than enclosed cabinets. Shelving is installed all the way to the ceiling, with less-used items at the top (like those cake pedestals), and frequently used items within closer reach. Hanging mugs beneath the lower shelf makes them accessible without taking up valuable shelf space.

Solution 4: Lighten up. As we often see in Swedish interiors, white lightens the spaces and makes for a brighter disposition inside even if it's gray and dim outside. White doesn't have to mean perfect: the whitewashed floors and walls of these interiors still show age and wear. White also doesn't have to mean stark: some of these spaces have a warm, buttery color to them. The key to appearing expansive is that the white-ish tones of the surfaces are relatively uniform.

Does anyone know where the futon sofa in the first photo is from? It's gorgeous and I'm looking for something exactly like it for a small space.

What's sort of shocking to me is how this "In My Carport" blog, which is based on a store, is in the middle of nowhere. It's like the Swedish version of 20 miles outside of Cornell. OK, it's 15 miles from Uppsala which is a decent university town, but this sort of design seems to usually come from city people trying to look like country people. This is country people looking like country people, which is startling!

Here's a map of the village (looks cold):

Not sure closing off an area (ie. the niche) would work well in most small spaces. I'm also trying to see if that white thing is part of a chair or a pillow, and if the latter, would it fall if you leaned on it. Cute idea, though; reminds me of the blanket tents Mom used to make me when I was little.

And lovely rooms. All white is a bit much for me but mostly white with some color pops look great in a small space.

Hate the open shelving since it always looks cluttered but everything else is great.
