A World of Folk

As going green becomes a priority, folk movements are starting to re-emerge that embrace natural materials and traditional handcrafts. French trend analyst Li Edelkoort explores these movements in a new catalog and exhibition titled A World of Folk...

The exhibition takes place in Norway, where objects are displayed inside a series of timber pavilions designed by architects Helen & Hard. We viewed the show virtually through the catalog. A few images from the series:

"folk movements" are an academic and critical invention. well crafted, honest, artisan made furniture and objects that draw on their surroundings are not trends.

the aesthetic movement, arts and crafts, bauhaus, modern craft, studio, and now limited edition art furniture and objects are a continuum embracing several core ideal - natural products, handmade by people well versed in both history and their chosen medium - since the rise of the middle class in the late 1800s.

it is not always fashionable, but history, and the decorating community, do tend to eventually catch on. think carlo bugatti, greene and greene, george ohr, pond farm, alexander noll, wharton esherick and george nakashima, the natzlers, the whole california craft design movement, noguchi lighting, the maloof family, dale chiluly (and this is a very small sample). the reinterpretation of folk and craft are a part of most definable art and design schools.
