All-White Interiors

013108whitekitchent.jpg

Looking out our window right now, all we see is white. The snow is falling quickly and the ground is covered in a thick, fresh blanket. Brick and green leaves peek out, but mostly, it's a white scene. While we personally thrive on color, we respect and often ogle in awe at super white spaces:

All-white is better than all-the-same-other-color interiors, of which all-grey, all-beige, all-silver and all-brown are the most common.

that last pic is AMAZING...I think all white spaces can work and feel warm

I think "all anything" interiors are gutsy and hard to pull off. Even all beige.

Don't think I could live with all-white here in NYC, but would love to in Lauderdale!!

i am a huge fan of white interiors - love all the pics except the first one - that's just a white out.

Very pretty; it is obvious that some people do not have a black cat.

LOL on that black cat comment...he'd have trouble hiding in a place like that!

The shadow play on that first photo almost makes it look like a 3-D render it's so clean.

All white is great, but I actually wouldn't want to live in any of these except for the last one. I think an all white interior needs a pop of bold color somewhere, and the books serve that purpose.

I think they're amazing, but they're definitely not for me. I'm always impressed with them in photos - never been remotely tempted to do it myself. I love that white tufted headboard against the slightly gray wall, though!

The top few just look washed out to me. I do like the bottom photo. There definitely needs to be a bit of colour in the room, or at least something black for visual contrast.

This is so hard to do, especially without the money to pick exactly what you want and have things custom colored. For it to look right you either have to match all the whites (and if one is off it will stand out like a sore thumb), or you have to mix and match them just as carefully as if it weren't an all white space; being super aware of their tint and texture, and balancing the room.

It's so hard I think of it as more of an art exercise or an installation than a viable decorating style!

I admire them, but then I think--so, what happens when you come home and take off your shoes, do they have to be white? Do you have to have all white clothing and accessories? I mean, you REALLY start to notice clutter when everything's white!

To me, all-white rooms (and maybe this is a bad analogy, but I'm going for it) are kind of like communism: a great idea in theory, but in real life, they just don't quite work. Pretty, and pretty high-maintenance. Some of these are beautiful (I love the last photo in particular), but if you have a) a pet, b) children, or c) dirt on the bottom of your shoes, forget it. Beautiful but (at least for me - props to anyone who could keep everything THAT white) completely impractical. And that second-to-last photo looks like the activity room of a sanitorium. No thanks.

Lovely but not livable, and clearly not for red wine drinkers.

All white interiors soothe my brain and my overloaded senses.

Just like looking at a thicket of greenery or a turquoise ocean. Its somehow very calming...

(not real practical though!)

I couldn't do a whole house of this, but a room or two might be doable.

One cool possibility that this opens up is the ability to use colored lighting to change the whole mood of the room at night. Check out the Starck designed St Martin's Lane hotel which has all white bedrooms. Theres a dial next to the bed which lets you paint the room any color you want with light!

These rooms scare me because they make me think of hospitals. I see these and imagine someone having open heart surgery on the dining table.

If these rooms are meant to be "art" or a "statement", of some sort... well then, have at it-... I guess.
But liveable? Practical? Gee whiz.
With the exception of Starck's setup, the others are just a cop out and scream "I ran out of imagination".

"Very pretty; it is obvious that some people do not have a black cat."

...or a three year-old boy.

I could never pull it off.

Eddy, Thanks for posting that super hilarious all white decor scene from Ab Fab. I immediately thought of it when looking at the photos.

I love all white decor, but I would never be able to pull it off (I have three black cats, one brown one, and another orange one.... I can just imagine the stacks of lint rollers I'd go through). Still, something about the pristine nature of it is so chic and luxe looking.

These photos are so pretty and so soothing. I don't own any pets or have any children, so I think I could pull off maybe one room in my house like this, but it would be difficult. You'd have to hide away *all* of your clutter, or at least all of your non-white clutter.

hysterical comment goldengirl..activity room at a sanitorium..... : ),,, I have tried many times..but I always start 'sneaking' in a color..maybe just this one green vase..maybe just this one soft blue pillow..etc..I have realized that the BEST way for us to achieve these rooms is to frame them and group them...on a white wall...in our colorful real life rooms?? Great idea?? I think so!

These photos are the interiors equivalent of a Vogue couture fashion shoot, where the model is impossibly young (to be wearing a five figure gown) and bent into some awkward, dramatic pose that would never occur in real life, even if she fell down a flight of stairs.

The pictures are lovely, but the rooms as depicted don't exist except for in the minutes when the photo stylist is finished and the photographer is still taking pictures.
