The Homeric Poems Hotel, on the coast of the Agean Sea, takes its color cues from the horizon. The simple blue and white palette makes you focus your eye on the view, and on the texture of the whitewashed walls.
A few blue and white details we love:
• Painted two-tone steps
• Blue and white striped rugs
• White interior walls with blue trim

The two tone grey steps are not just an aesthetic nicety, they are also a safety feature; not only does the colour visually differentiate one step from an other, but I believe the grey has a gritty texture, and so provides necessary traction.

love santorini... but honestly, what works there just can't be pulled off in many other places... it's the bright sunlight, ever-present sea, the landscape, and gorgeous sunsets that really make the architecture shine....
probably the prettiest place on earth......

Um, I think that if someone did a little research, you might find a reason why those colors are used in Santorini (look for a law adopted in 1974). Then you might understand that the blue/white scheme was not original to the area. Yes, the mediterrranean sun bleaches colors out. But houses were/are routinely whitewashed (including with asbestos in the old days); the blue paint was often leftover marine paint; and most islands used stone insets are traditional decoration, not paint. Most people who are restoring houses in the islands leave Aegean Blue/White schemes to the tourist businesses.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Santorini and I highly recommend "Anastasis Apartments". Sweeping views of the caldera, the most relaxing and beautiful place to go. It's a hidden gem! www.anastasisapartments.com
