Poking around Southern Living's site, we found a lot of low-cost ideas with a traditional twist. There are plenty of DIYable projects such as furniture makeovers and plate displays, but our favorite ideas came from the magazine's budget-friendly house tours, including a designer's ranch house renovation in Houston and an inspiring starter home in Atlanta...

Designer Patti Perrier madeover her Houston ranch house by removing the carpet and painting the walls with a cream color. Patti paid attention to basics such as furniture arrangements and window coverings, avoiding an expensive overhaul.

In Atlanta, this first-time homeowner decorated her place with reupholstered furniture, homemade pillows, and carefully chosen flea market finds.

In this kitchen, compartmentalized shelves are stacked upwards to create more functional storage space. For other ways to make the most of a small kitchen, click here.

Blue and white plates on the wall add character to this country bathroom. Inside the bathroom closet, a hidden washer and dryer add another level of functional space.

This thrift store find was transformed with paint and new hardware. The magazine documented the makeover with step-by-step instructions.

All about the reupholstered furniture--it looks great :)

Pretty and fresh. At first I thought that the living room looked very expensive and "out-of-reach" for us normal folks but there's actually not alot of furniture, just alot of rich, stunning fabrics and furniture styles, very inspiring.

I enjoy the whole look of plates and cutlery on walls! What would the world be like without Spoon Collections?
