Decorating with Utilitarian Collections
Part II

Last week, we wrote about decorating with collections of useful things: sewing tools, dry goods, dishes, clothes, and blankets were just a few examples. Today, we're revisiting the idea that functional things can be beautiful, too...

  1. Artfully arranged collections of useful things, like the pen cups shown above, are all over the Fahden's home.
  2. In Laura's home, Q-tips and cotton pads look great in apothecary jars, while a display of stones adds some color and texture to the arrangement.
  3. Hung on hooks, Steve and Sarah's colanders become wall decor. The set-up makes them easily accessible and adds to the character of the kitchen.
  4. B, Joe & Rachael's bicycle collection looks sharp against the railings of their split-level dining room.
  5. Built-in shelves are the perfect backdrop for Terisa and Colin's wine collection. The arrangement creates a focal point in their kitchen.
  6. Kim uses a collection of fabric scraps for projects. Folded on top of a case of drawers, they match the color scheme of her office.
  7. Jacob and Laurie store their daughter's shoes in a brightly painted wall shelf, which was a CD tower in a former life.
  8. Random cooking tools look organized in pink containers, which complement the colors of Amy's kitchen.
  9. Books are classic examples of useful objects that double as attractive decor. Tanis and Terry keep their collection in a handsome antique lawyer's cabinet.
  10. Naz and Jen decorated the face of their fridge in business cards.

Oh! I have that exact tiny dishrack. I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond about 5 years ago. Not sure if they still have it. I will say that I love it and have never found another quite so small as to fit in my itty bitty kitchen.
