The latest round of Guess the Decade began last Friday with this photo of a cook's kitchen. We found the photo on from the designer's website and thought it was filled with all the little details that make guessing fun

Guess the Decade: A Cook's Kitchen - The Answer
The crowd TOTALLY nailed this one. It is the eighties, through and through. The large majority said so, with 129 votes for the 80's vs. 76 for the 90's - the next highest ranked decade. The 70's came in third with 22, followed by NOW with 11, and there was a just a handful of votes for the 60's and earlier.
The kitchen is from a French-Caribbean residence in Mississippi designed by Charme-Tate in the late eighties. It appeared in Southern Living magazine.
What gave it away? According to the commenters, it was the appliances...and PlanItGirl is questioning herself now....she says, "Is something wrong with me? I'm kinda diggin' the 80's appliances for some reason... Nostalgia."
The Pickled cabinets gave it away for blackbird and bepsf, and the coffee maker got lots of mentions.
A very astute comment from cblls pretty much summed it up: "looks like a kitchen you'd see in a tom hanks movie. circa 'the burbs' i say 80s".

btw: great functional layout for a kitchen.
Although I detest appliances/fixtures in the island/bar.
The barstools need to go too.

It was the wicker chairs for me. We had some similar ones when I was growing up.

This picture is a good example of "good" design, whatever that era, transcends the cliches of that era. I hate, hate, HATE 80s pickled and wicker, but the warm lighting here and the french provincial look with the hung plates and the copper potrack and cookware gives the room a much more timeless look (plus, no pastel pink). This wouldn't be my dream kitchen by any stretch, but it has a more classic and timeless look than the 80s mass-produced versions did.

I generally prefer more modern design (a la Living Etc.), but for some reason I really like this kitchen, give or take a few items. I think it's perfect for a French-Caribbean house in Missisippi - very "This Old House"--and it pretty timeless.
