Guess The Decade: Saarinen Sitting Room - The Answer

2008-02-08-saarinensmall.jpg Last Friday, we kicked off a little game of Guess the Decade, featuring a sitting area with the Saarinen womb settee and chair. When we came across the photo, we felt it was pretty classic and timeless, making the exact decade not easily distinguishable. But (not surprisingly - you know your stuff!) the AT readers nailed it....

It's a photo from 1965 - Betty Pepis Interior Decoration A to Z.

91 of you voted 60's making it the lead decade by far in our survey. It was followed by the 70's with 56 votes - this would have been our guess - something about the casually displayed unframed Chinese print and dried flowers moved it into that decade for us.

The 50's garnered nearly as many votes, 48, which is not surprising, due to the vintage of the pieces and the artwork. It was followed by the 80's, perhaps due to the color scheme - that single wall in bright red could be read as an eighties touch.

As always, the comments from everyone were great...with Johnny Slimane offering up the exact years of the womb settees availability and the aesthetic onion bringing up the Chinese influence on decor post WWII. An interesting observation came from kimg924..."I voted 70s because this looks like a collection of the best from several decades -- the throw and dried flowers and stack of coffee table books looks like classic Sunset Magazine accents.". Finally, dn was looking at the art..."The art says at most very early sixties, except for the mirror. That little round mirror (assuming that's what it is) is very now, but I voted 50s.".

Thanks for playing along!

Ah, having a poor sense of how to date styles, I voted the 50s because I knew Saarinen died in the early 60s.

I voted 60's not because of the space itself, but the quality of the photography - it's classic 60's design book/magazine.

To be honest, I was thrown a bit by the accent wall. I thought that was more of a 80's to 00's sort of thing. That and the fact that there is not a trace of wood paneling to be found.

Yes - this is a FUN game - lets have more!
I was right on this one but I need to test my skill a few more times before I decide to quit my day job to become a professional "Decade Identifier".

Without even looking at the date given just below the photo, I guessed mid 60's.

What brought me to this conclusion was first of all, how the photo was arranged, secondly, the colors used were colors that if I recall right, were seen quite often in decorating books of this time period, and later too.

Take a look at many decorating books of the mid to late 60's, such as the Doubleday Decorating book, A-Z (1965-66), Better Homes and Gardens books and of course, Sunset magazines for many of them used styles much like this.

The colors and artwork just said mid to late 60's if nothing else.
