There are a few ways you can hang a spare chair. David (an engineer) designed and built his own system, Bernard used ceiling hooks and strong wire to suspend his chairs against the wall, the Shakers used peg rail, and a folding chair needs nothing more than a sturdy hook. The clothes-hanger chairs are brilliant.
As for the others... The Shaker look works because it's simple. In a less spare room, chairs on the wall could be visual clutter.
(I do like the fun Eames chair on the ceiling, and I suspect it isn't there just for storage.)

Bernard's Small Cool entry was my favorite this year! I was bummed that he didn't win the international division...

I agree with Lisa, the clothes-hanger it's quite witty. As for the rest of them I'm not a fan because it seems they will fall at any moment. That's not something I would want no.

I find it unsettling to have a chair hanging on the wall. I don't know why.

I'm surprised that I have such a strong opinion about this, but I absolutely do. not. like. this.

I was born and raised in earthquake country, and this makes me VERY nervous...

I agree that the hanger chairs are clever, and the Shaker chair storage works because of its simplicity and uncomplicated functionality. I find any attempt to be clever by hanging chairs in an (apparently) precarious position jutting out from the wall to be kind of irritating and/or unsettling.

I don't like this at all. I can understand the concept of having a new innovative/creative way to store extra chairs, but I don't know. Something just isn't sitting right. In the 2nd image with the orangeish bedding and chair, it looks like its about to fall off the wall. I would be all nerves if that was my place.

Gotta agree the shaker chairs 'work', because they look like the are actually being stored, rather than hung on the wall as 'edgy art'. I also adore the little chair 'stored' above the fridge in the third photo. But it's still something I would consider doing under the right circumstances. In a small space with high ceilings Especially the right way up because the seat could be used as a shelf for something small (maybe the extra dinnerware you'd need to feed your guests) making it multipurpose storage.

People are too nervous these days. Chairs belong on the wall. If I had a chair, that's where I'd put it: on the wall.

I'm undecided about the hangers/chairs. On the one hand, I love that they fold up so completely flat, unlike many folding chairs. But on the other hand, a normal hanger is much thinner, so I can cram more clothes into my closet. And I'd hate having to remove shirts every time I want to use the chair.

I was ready to be bored with this post but LOVE the clothes hanger chairs.
