It's a new year filled with (hopefully) new ideas. We spent some time over the break working on our own home, which always inspires us. But before the holiday break, we were feeling pretty depleted. The well of inspiration was dry and we had to get going on our own place to refill it. We're wondering: how do you refill the well? (Let us know in the comments below.)
Besides working on our own home, we look to blogs (AT of course!), read magazines, and visit other people's homes. We love to go to bookstores and flip through the interior design section for a few minutes. Cleaning also helps us view our home in a new light.

take a photograph and see how it looks in the photograph. It never looks like it does to the eye and so forces a fresh appraisal of what's there.

leafing through catalogs and my favorite design books helps me too...and checking out books recommended by others.

In addition to reading the design mags, flipping through cutouts from past issues, and reading blogs (which to me provides the most inspiration), I also enjoy exploring and photographing the city around me...you don't have to go far- just taking a walk in your neighborhood and really looking around can be really inspiring...

i love going into some fancy store, say on Fifth Avenue, and looking at the merchandise. today, i went into the Façionnable store and saw some color combinations on ties that made me do double-takes. it's good to look for inspiration everywhere.

Jonathan B--excellent advice! I do this all the time. Photos of our place inspired me to lower the artwork, even below the 57 rule, so that the pictures integrate better with the furnishings.
