How Do You Reward Yourself at Home?

11-14-08reward.jpg

With the economy in a slump and the cold winter months upon us, many people are feeling a little down. During times like these, it's important to take care of yourself—not necessarily with retail therapy, but by giving yourself hard-earned rewards like time well spent, a good meal, a get-together with friends, or a night of movie-watching…

This weekend, we’re blocking out a slot of time to fill with whatever we feel like. No plans, just an empty afternoon to read a book, take a walk, or do nothing.

We’re wondering: What are the small rewards you give yourself at home?

A bubble bath or a soak in the Jacuzzi with some Disaronno on the rocks...

Definitly a bath! Also...I know its not really a "reward" but I can relax so much easier after I have mopped my floors.

A bubble bath, a day spent reading on the couch with my kitties (one in my lap in front of the book, the other on my shins, behind the book. Without the divider, they'll fight) or spending an entire afternoon making dinner just because I want to.

White Cheddar and Black Peppercorn popcorn from Dale & Thomas, a glass (or two) of a nice (or not) Malbec, a good movie, then some smoochin.'

Staying in bed for a few extra hours on Saturday morning watching TV and snuggling with my boyfriend and our three dogs! Nothing like slowly waking up with 4 warm creatures who you love by your side.

A good mystery novel. Picking it up, and not putting it down for much of anything until I'm finished.

Putting on my old smoking jacket and jazz records, settling into my butterfly chair with a glass of scotch and a good architecture book.
I think I have a plan for a rainy Friday night...

I take Sunday's off. No chores or plans, except ballroom dancing class in the evening. I usually end up taking long walks and baking pies.

Before the newborn, my answer would've been "a bottle wine and a good book - break into a loaf of crusty bread and brie when nearing the bottom of the bottle".

Now? I'd be happy with 10 uninterupted minutes in a bubble bath.... with a glass of wine. :-)

Lounge on the couch with a good book and maybe a good record on the turntable.

Making time to play "beauty parlor" - facial masks, doing my nails, and using all of the fun, scented, luxurious "girly" stuff that makes me feel attractive and pampered. I pull out samples and try new makeup, etc. This may or may not include a bubble bath, music, and appropriate beverages.

Spending the afternoon reading the latest piece of fiction in my leather chair, having a couple glasses of Shiraz, then heading to the grocery to buy dinner. This all followed by a movie rented at home with you know who. Definitely economical, and fun to be domestic.

This weekend I bought a new (to me) metal dresser designed by Norman Bel Geddes in the 30's or 40's for $39. That, to me, was a great reward, especially when I see that the same dresser, in good condition, retails for $1200 !!

I like to go to the record store a pick out a few new records, like some old R&B and Soul, Funk, or classic rock... and I just discovered the enjoyment of mulled wine! My previous drink of choice was scotch. I like to kick back and listen to music. It does not happen that much though... sigh.

Sometimes, when I'm reading a British mystery, I'll make myself an afternoon tea. I serve it formally in the living room with the best china and crystal. The tea is properly brewed -- steeped in the kitchen in an eathenware pot, then strained into a china pot with a tea cosy.

(hugs to moptop)

Hot cocoa, coffee or tea and a good book

An afternoon off for baking (this is really special for me; it doesn't get very cold often here!)

A clear cold day to putz with my plants and clean up the balcony (which I should have done last weekend, but - oh well)

Make huz massage my feet (This has never happened; I just suddenly thought it would be nice and I should try it)

Sitting in bed late mornings and writing, particularly if it's something steamy

Cue up belly dance playlist on iPod, put on hip scarf, shake it
