Last night we caught a rerun of What's Eating Gilbert Grape on TV. (It's hard to pass on a 1990s Johnny Depp movie.) Being the Apartment Therapy nerd that I am, I grabbed the remote to TiVo this scene when I realized just how many small space ideas were crammed into Juliette Lewis' trailer...

Our favorite detail is the long shelf above the window. (Maxwell and Sara Kate had a similar setup in their old one-bedroom.) We also like the under-shelf lighting.

The banquette against the window can double as sleeping space or a seating area. (We love the chintzy fabrics on the sofa and the cushions.) Folding chairs at the table can be stowed away to create more floor space.

In the slim space between windows, wall hooks provide an area to hang hats and scarves.

Open shelving creates storage space above the refrigerator, while magnetic clips hang notes. The tiny skylight in the trailer roof is another nice touch. For more info on What's Eating Gilbert Grape, check it out on IMDb.
Well of course - it's an Airstream.

perhaps i could cram her into one of those small-space shelving units prior to taking her place investigating johnny depp's bicuspids.

I love Airstreams. My family had several over the years, old ones from the 60's and 70's. They are incredibly well designed, and they seem much larger inside than they look from the outside. We had one, where the entire little bathroom converted into a shower!

This really reminds me of my old VW pop-top camper, which, while not in the same league as an Airstream, had more storage than some apartments I've lived in. I would joke with people that it got really good mileage, "for a house"...

To save space, do it standing up.
