Inspiration: Hotel Sigtuna's Spare Simplicity

2-16-09hotel1.jpg

Sometimes the best way to decorate is to work within strict limits, especially if you're starting with a gorgeous space that doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles. The Hotel Sigtuna in Sweden is one of those places - simple, spare, and beautifully restrained. Decorated by architecture and design firm Lindvall, the furnishings and custom-made fittings were chosen for their connection to the "golden age of Scandinavian design."

Built in 1909, the 26-room Sigtuna is Sweden's smallest five-star hotel. The building is sited in the center of the 1,000-year-old town of Sigtuna, thirty minutes from Stockholm. Oh, that's by a Bauhaus designer, can't remember it off hand. Not a Swedish design. Interestingly, since the rest look very, VERY Swedish.

You can buy that Bauhaus lamp at the MoMA store for a cool $925. I've coveted it forever.
