Inspiration: Using Color In Unexpected Places

092208-doorstep.jpg Color can be used most anywhere in your home, but in Grand Rapids Michigan, at the home of the Zohreh Daly, color is being used where most people wouldn't think. The threshold. Click through the jump for tips on doing this look yourself and a few more photos of her colorful interior.

Zohreh gave us a few pointers on the precision painting of the letters on her threshold. "It's really easy! Just print out your name in a large font on regular paper. Shade the back of the page with a soft pencil (like a 4B). Flip onto whatever you want to paint. Trace. Take small brush and paint in letters. Let dry. Clean pencil off. Easy!"

092208-dootstepdr.jpg The choices of accessories, flowers and color of furniture play nicely off each other in this easy-on-the-eyes dining room.

092208-doorsteplr.jpg Her living room has neutral walls which allow the furniture to be the focal points in the room.

092208-doorstepporch.jpg The vibrant colors are continued outside on the sun porch, an area often forgot about. But not here, this porch would be a great place to hang out and enjoy the fall weather.

Thanks Zohreh for sharing your hard work with us!

Can anyone name that paint color in the dining room? It's exactly what I've been looking for to go on my ceilings!

"Celadon Pottery" from Valspar. Now be forewarned, it's almost a Tiffany Box blue in the evening! That is why I am going to repaint it "Vintage Map" when I get off my butt. . .someday.

This tip for applying the name to the threshold is exactly how my older sister and I used to forge our parent's signatures on school papers!

:) We were so good at being so bad!

The living room color is called "Linen" from Valspar (it's in one of the signature collections but I forgot which one!). :-D

What beautiful colors to combat the dreary Michigan winters.

Can anyone tell me where I can get those great green chairs in the living room?

Could you give the name of the white paint in the living room (on and above the fireplace)? It's a nice shade--doesn't look like a pure white.

The fireplace was already painted and I haven't touched it. I'm sorry, but I haven't a clue of the color! :-( I can try to match it if you want.

The dining room color looks like what I have in my bedroom...I used Benjamin Moore's Aura paint in Thunderbird. It's awesome and I love it. Also love the Aura line as I had to paint over a dark burgundy wall and it handled it, no problem, in two coats.

Zohreh, do you recall where you got the green occasional chairs in your living room? They look so familiar, I believe I've seen them in a beige/oatmeal color in the past.

Thanks

Cubanbee, those green chairs are actually from Ikea's clearance section. I think I got them in 2005 and so they're probably out by now. Personally, I am sick of them and hopefully I will get something more comfy. :-) Thank you though!
