"Jewelry" for a Room

1-22-08jewelry.jpg

My grandmother had great style, and she let me in on the secret. She bought classic clothes and used jewelry to change the style of her outfits. Her high-quality shirts and pants lasted for years, and she mixed things up with a combination of real and costume jewelry. Years later, I try to apply the same rule to decorating. High-quality, classic furniture anchors a room, and the rest is "jewelry."

"Room jewelry" can be expensive: a chandelier, artwork for the walls, an antique lamp. Or it can be simple and easy-going: fresh flowers, a warm throw, a cluster of candles. Without the basics a room has no substance, but without the jewelry it lacks soul...

Simple, well-planned details can bring a lot of life into a room. Our favorite room jewelry: good lighting, flowers, house plants, throws, and artwork. (We love the "jewelry" in this image from Janel's post on How to Hang Artwork in Clusters).
