apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Mies Lake Shore Drive Bachelor Pad by Hudson Home

Since moving to Chicago nearly a decade ago, we've had a soft spot for the Mies residential buildings. In fact, we even flirted with the idea of purchasing an available apartment in one of them when we were new to the city (until we found out that the building didn't allow dogs at the time). So, it was with great...

...pleasure that we got to take a peek inside one of the apartments through the photos of a recent renovation by Hudson Home. A full re-do of a Mies van der Rohe co-op is no small project and Hudson Home was the architect, builder and designer of this renovation which is described by the firm as a "bachelor pad".

We like the generally minimalist vibe, the slightly rounded geometric shapes, the reflective quality of the metallics and glass used, the simplicity of forms and the quiet colors used throughout - especially when combined with the just-right "pop" of color in the bedroom.

Enjoy the mini-tour and visit Hudson Home for more photos and info.

I like the place... Cool vibes... Nice color palette for the space. I always see these places and wonder where they keep their books. I seem to have them by the dozens and could never keep them hidden.

So lovely! *swoon* I've been inside several of the Mies buildings, but this unit inspires so much more envy than any I've seen.

Following James's comment - The apartment is beautiful. Perfect. Quite perfect to look at. But... how does one return the glasses and dishes to the shelves in such obsessive order? Using a ruler (Or does the resident always eat out, and the kitchen is just a trophy indication his success and good taste?) My own trophies are books, used, borrowed, yellowed, some from childhood. James, I agree, but never WOULD keep them hidden.

As for trophy homes: I don't give a damn about dog friendly buildings, but even in my "bachelor pad" days, I always seemed to have a stream of guests with dripping baby bottles, friends with bad fork coordination, locked out neighbors with old lady shopping carts filled with leeks, and occasional lost birds. All were welcome, but the bird droppings. A little human imperfection is heartwarming.

is that a genie lamp on the counter? that would explain a lot.

I'm pretty minimalist myself but this looks more like a corporate rental.

Nothing wrong with trophies, IMO.

This reminds me so much of Dr. Cox's apt on Scrubs!

Well of course it's been styled! Every home is before a photo shoot. Like a guy would really keep a bowl of lemons on his counter. But styling does make for a nice photo.

gorgeous, simply gorgeous. I would love a place like that... except it is a bit impractical, as others have noted. The kitchen is especially beautiful, but open shelving is not the best for a family that actually cooks...

my decorating goal is to approach this style, but in a more affordable and practical layout (such as more covered storage).

none the less, this home is stunning.

The counter stools are perfect. I would love a set of those. If I had a counter.

Swoon.

Favorite Mies buildings for sure.

I have the Bertoia counter stools as well, in black, but they look much better in white. Simply stunning reno job. The dining area is amazing and THANK GOD they didn't put curtains on the windows. A little piece of me dies when I ride by these buildings on my bus commute and see the filthy curtains that hang in a lot of the units.

Only two things that I would've done different. Four stools seems excessive. Especially the scale of those - they're huge. And the rug in the kitchen is a little sad.

I think it's cool that someone can go with something as minimalist as this place. It would be daunting for me. I'd at least have to have a bulletin board with some visual jokes on it.

What are you all referring to about the storage and practicality of this beauty of an apartment? If you look there are two floor to ceiling cupboards where all the practical daily use utensils and appliances are kept. Of course it is not for a family as the article is titled "a bachelors pad". Not for everyone.
Besides, I am a guy and I can keep my place uber organized like this. If you put it in a place to begin with, you just return it after it is used...no?
Human imperfections? I don't think so...not in my home!!
