apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Loft Apartment by Shelton, Mindel & Associates

This loft apartment by Shelton, Mindel and Associates is just so sleek. The first thing we noticed was the unexpected gray-blue and red-orange color scheme. And then we saw the living room...

The contrasting gray finish on these walls makes this space really sing, and the use of such a bold accent color in the lighting fixtures is another unexpected twist that really works. Although this is a posh living room in an unbelievable loft, it's full of little details like the lamps that we'd definitely use in a smaller space.

Another idea to steal: instead of dividing the space with screens or a tall room divider, the two conversation areas are sectioned off by this long, low bench. It's an innovative way to break up the area without interrupting its flow.

We like how the curtains are hung from the ceiling rather than from the windows. It allows for floor-length sheers in spite of the ledge, and it gives the curtains the feeling of floating.

This idea works well on a budget. Instead of using a sideboard in the kitchen, use a floating shelf in a bold accent color that matches your dishes.

Any idea what those grey wall panels are made of?

I could handle that.

Although spaces like this are always VERY nice...for some reason, they just come off feeling "cold" to me...

I love the bench idea, the floating shelf by the dining room, and the floor-to-ceiling curtains.

Those are some wild light fixtures. I agree the space feels a little cold, but I think it has as much to do with the textures (or lack of them) as anything else. I like the color combo.

Luv it! Red is my favorite color!
I am going for a similar look with red, white and grey... Only on a MUCH smaller scale. (I think my entire apt would fit into the dining room.)

Does anyone know where the chairs are from?

Sorry, I meant the dining chairs... just realized there are about a hundred other chairs in the apartment :)

plann.b, one big reason they feel cold is because there's no one in them. But also, there's no sense of anyone having been there at any time. Because nothing looks this pristine when it's lived in. That's why I'm a big fan of design and catalogue pictures where things aren't always perfect...an unmade bed, a cat running across the room, shoes by the door...

Shelton & Mindel kick(s) ass.

And I totally disagree that these rooms feel cold. "Cool" yes, cold, no.

I love it. The chandeliers over the dining table are brilliant. It's a very warm, modern space. The splashes of reds and oranges adds a dramatic touch of color.

I know what the big swingarm lamp in the pictures is, because it is my all-time favourite! It is the Arteluce 265, by Paolo Rizzato, manufactured by Flos.

(See it in another spacious, cool room.)

It runs about $1000.

I LOVE those light blue chairs with all the gray, and white, and light touches of deep red and some orange. It's gorgeous. It's modern, it's classic, it's cool-feeling, but not cold. To feel alive, they need to throw a bra over a door handle, leave out a carton of OJ, and perhaps leave a couple of magazines or take-out menus strewn about the place. After all, with a loft, in the city, who cooks?

Needs some art but otherwise, it's quite nice. There sure is a plenty seating.

A bra over the door handle? Now that there is some classy styling!
