Loft-Right Student Apartments at DePaul University

8-13-07loftright1.jpg

Dorm living looks a lot better than it did when we were in school. The Loft-Right building in Lincoln Park provides DePaul University students with apartments entirely furnished in Herman Miller designs. Although apartments can only be rented by full-time students, we loved looking at their website for eye candy and inspiration. More pictures below...

Hey, where the UofChicago equivalent?
I'll also pipe up that this looks nicer than my apartment. I won't torture myself by checking rent.

seriously not fair. my college days didn't have anything remotely close to being this cool. and how great to not have to waste your precious few dollars on bad furniture, but to have it all included in your rent.

Wow. All I can say is that sharing a 4br loft on one of the lower floors of this building is comparable to what I paid for a tiny, unfurnished, built in the year 2000 B.C. and not since updated, crap neighborbood, university-affiliated studio in SF years ago! I am curious to hear from those who live in the area as to whether, considering the furnished aspect, and the amenities included in the rent and services fee, this is considered a good deal for all, or just for wealthier students.

my sister is moving into this building in september. she's paying $695 per month for shared room (loft style bunk beds of course!). single rooms are $895 per month.

I'm sorry, but that's not real college living. I wouldn't give up my year in the 10x12 concrete dorm room with our cheap lofted beds and the dirty communal shower for anything.

Single rooms are $895 in the cheaper floors...looks like your rent can go up to $1600 for a single in a top floor two bedroom.

Where I went to college in a small town in Minnesota, every campus-owned room (you were required to live on campus unless you got permission as a senior to live off-campus) was the same price and it was totally covered by financial aid as necessary. The quality evened out over four years...it sucks for people to be able to establish themselves as richer or poorer from day one of first year.

As a 2007 DePaul graduate, I can tell you that a lot of people who lived there were very unhappy with Loft-Right - it is seriously overpriced for most student budgets and apparently mismanaged, as the SunTimes article highlights. I lived for a year in downtown's brand new, "state of the art" University Center, which had many of the same issues. I would never it to anyone.

And really, how many college students do YOU know that would recognize and appreciate the mid-century classics that make up Loft-Rite's décor? Maybe that's a snobby thing to say, but I wanted to laugh after having a conversation with some students who lived there. I asked them how they liked their new homerecommend (trying not to let my jealousy show) and they said it was OK but the furniture was totally "cheap looking".... all "plastic and stuff."

Yes, a lot of DePaul students have had complaints about the construction of Loft-Right. I haven't heard too much praise, you may have to grow into that style of design.

DePaul actually has a lot of ridiculous apartment-style dorms, because they just absorbed the housing stock from around them. My junior and senior years I shared a four-room townhouse with 6 other girls (2 to a room and one single). I shared the master bedroom and it was crazy large, we each had our own closet and our bathroom had a sunken tub and seperate shower. We could paint and decorate without being charged for damages. My friends who visited from state schools seethed with jealousy.

Those plastic types of chairs were miserably uncomfortable in the 60's & 70's, speaking as someone who suffered though that craze the first time around.

As retro as that first picture might look I'd hate to have those uncomfortable torture devices as the only seating options.

Is retro the only good design?

I lived here for a year, and trust me this place is not what loft-right is trying to make it be. It's crap. It's a total dump. For chicago, rent was ok. (about $1075) Since I lived there rent has dropped I think $200 because no one wants to live there and even though the building is almost three years old, and I was expected to sell out within a month, loft-right is STILL struggling to get students to rent. For a freshman this place is fine, but not after that. Dorms at DePaul are pretty much the same price as well. It's Chicago and it's expensive, but you can get your own place studio, with privacy, and security that doesn't treat you like 8 year olds, and without a bunch a drunk children, and terrible management for a lot less. Loft-right is a scam. Just a bunch a empty promises.

If rental prices were about 20-25% lower and there was new management installed, do you think that students would rent at this building? What other issues remain at the building preventing kids from seriously considering this building?
