We've talked before about our love for the Fine Arts building and the "don't make em like that anymore" elevator adventure, but on a visit earlier this month we discovered a new tenant in the building. The Selected Works Used Bookshop inspired this post on another thing we love...the look of lots and lots of old books. We simply had to snap a bunch of photos of this "just right" shop - it is a great example of how remarkably decorative a wall of books can be and how fascinating these wonderful items are; to read, collect and for creating atmosphere at home...

Of course, in addition to all the great old books, the "eye" behind a great looking display is important too. Shop proprietor Keith Peterson was telling us that he pulled this new shop together really quickly after relocating from a Northside location to the Fine Arts Building. It is a testament to the coziness and quirkiness of his style that the shop feels like its been there for decades instead of months.

Selected Works Used Books is located in Suite 210 at 410 S. Michigan. 11-8 M-Sat and 11-4 Sun. 312.447.0068.
Thanks to Keith for letting us take all the photos!
nothing like treasure hunting in a used book store

This is very timely, as just a few nights ago I realized that of all my interior design inspirational clippings, only a very few have any books in them. Don't these people read?! I, for one, would welcome a feature on how to integrate (a lot of) books into a beautiful and balanced room, short of making a dedicated library or arranging by spine color (my organizational system just can't get on board with that).

Thank you, janel. A refreshing change from the books-as-clutter point of view.

I am so glad you discovered Selected Works Bookstore. It is, indeed, a wonderful place, filled with terrific books and sheet music.
I have known Keith, and Selected Works, since the very beginning, when the store was in Wrigleyville. It has always been a very special place. But now, because it is also in a very special building, many more people will have the opportunity to discover (and come to love) it.
Thanks so much for helping to tell more people about Selected Works!
