Look!: Color Inspiration from Wet Rocks

20080625rocks1.jpgWe're not much of a rock skipper. When we find ourselves on a beach, we'd much prefer to get caught up in rock collecting. Can you blame us? Wet rocks are beautiful!

Jump down to see why gathering these fine specimens reminds us of painting...

20080625rocks2.jpgThe problem with wet rocks is that, after filling pockets and trudging all the way home, they've up and dried out. This treasure, once glistening and so vivid in color, is suddenly nothing more than a pile of stupid rocks.

We tend to get just as color-enamored in a paint shop as we do on the beach. Can you blame us? A color chip rainbow is beautiful! We've fallen into the trap of choosing wall color because it looks so promising in the store. Only after painting the entire room do we realize it's wrong.

We used to think color testing was for the weak of heart but, after painting too many walls the color of disappointment, we're buying samples next time. No more dumb rock piles for us.

If you put the rocks in a transparent jar or bowl of water, they're just as beautiful all over again. And a big YES to the sample painting.

beach rocks are a big thing where i live in maine...but we collect the "heart stones" (rocks shaped naturally like hearts) for shape rather than color.
