Maxwell Street Market

042406maxwellst1.jpgYesterday we forged our way through the Maxwell Street Market, even though we needed nothing in particular. We hadn't been to the market in a couple of years and were thrilled to recall the hunt of it all. This is a true rough-around-the-edges market where displays can be scattered and messy, "good finds" means you have to find them, and loud announcements and blaring radios compete for your attention. Now nearing its 100-year anniversary, the rich history of Maxwell Street Market dates back to 1912, when it was officially established by the City of Chicago.

It's been called one of the "world's best flea markets" by the Travel Channel and was the original open stage for Chicago's blues musicians. In 1995, the market was uprooted to Canal Street to make way for UIC buildings, new businesses, and condos, a move that many say changed the market for good. We're just happy the market rolled with it and found a new home. Here are some of our shots from Sunday's 70 degree excursion, from which we walked away with 3 pineapples for $7, a gallon of paint for $4, and two steak tacos and a bottle of Coke for $4.50:

The linked site makes it pretty tough to tell where the market is located on Canal Street. I am assuming it's in the Roosevelt area- is this right? Thanks in advance!

stonelake:
you are right. if you click on "history," scroll down, and dig through the text, you find this:

"The new market has been established by the City about a half-mile east of the old market...on Canal Street and Roosevelt Road."

but there is no map or any specific directions. good luck!

Actually now that I look closely at your photos, I have eaten at the White Palace Grill many times. Canal and Roosevelt it is. Thanks!

For those who the White Palace is not (yet) a landmark, it's practically in the parking lot of the Jewel on Roosevelt by 90/94.

Or is it a Dominick's?

It's a Wallgreens, I think. The White Palace Grill (try the Tilapia Salad) is located at the Northeast corner of Canal and Roosevelt.

I fear we're not clearing this up for the people out there.

It's basically in the parking lot of a grocery store on the south side of Roosevelt, opposite the White Palace.
(not to be confused with White Castle)

It is a Domick's.
