After blogging the Wellcome Center's Club Room by Studioilse, we've been thinking about designers that are able to successfully tread the line between old-school luxury and modern comfort. We like the idea of the old English club room updated for the 21st century...it's a tricky look to pull off, but it can make a room feel really warm and welcoming. This Washington Square Apartment by David Netto has the hallmarks of a club room: leather chairs, dark walls, and an antique secretary. The simple fabrics and casual arrangements of objects make it informal and unstuffy.

This room from a Grand Dame in Presidio Heights by Jay Jeffers has a lot of timeless pieces: wing chairs, a tufted ottoman, and an ornate mantle. Small details bring contemporary style to the space: the piping on the ottoman, the light color combination, and the striped fabric on the chairs.

For me, none of these rooms have what really makes a club room - large comfortable armchairs you sink in to. Preferably leather. Also, insufficient amounts of books, papers and alcohol.
