Multi-Purpose Bedroom Retreats

2-11-08burnham1.jpg

We love designer Betsy Burnham's bedrooms. Besides making killer use of color, they always seem to have multiple purposes: they're hang-out spots, reading nooks, and storage areas. We know you're not supposed to use the bedroom to watch TV or do office work if you can help it, but we like the idea of using it as a spot to max and relax...

Chairs in the bedroom, walls of storage, and cozy spots to pull up a floor cushion are some of the features we love in these rooms. If you've got the space, we think transforming a bedroom into a restful retreat for your waking life is a great idea.

Wow. I don't usually find blue to be a relaxing "bedroom" color. But that top photo looks SO peaceful!

This is exactly how I imagine HEAVEN! :) It looks soooo peaceful! I love it!...I want to redo the colors of my bedroom now!

I think this works only because the room is large enough to have a separate zone(s) from the bed.

Those rooms are really not to my taste. That's not terrific use of color, that's *terrified* of color. White, white, white, white and a little more white just for variety. Worse than all beige, since at least beige can look warm. Instead, those rooms are icy.

The good part (and there is one!) is that those rooms show off a great use of *texture*. Soft and fuzzy, leathery, velvet, shag carpet, painted wood, glass... there are a lot of textures crammed into those two rooms and it's very appealing.

Looks heavenly to me, too. Very inspiring. I'm coveting that lounge, and the wall of storage. That is something I could actually do, if I reconfigure our closet space...hmmm...

Torrilin, I have to disagree. THAT much white is much bolder design choice than a mixture of colors. It's hard to keep looking that pristine, and it makes the furniture the center of attention, rather than the knick-knacks. I think the judicious use of blue in the top photo is just lovely. And that fluffy white rug looks soooo luxurious!

That might be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Wow, I love the chaise. Anyone have any idea where I can get one like that?

I actually think all white rooms are harder to pull off successfully than multicolored rooms.

I personally am finding my in-progress non-white bedroom a relaxing place at this moment--avoiding my neighbor's insanely loud TV!

I LOVE this bedroom! The bed looks so comfy and the rug is dreamy. I have always thought that all white bedding is the best way to go. There is something about crisp white sheets and down comforters that just ooze comfort and coziness.

Trishb - I am curious as to why you wouldn't think light blue a relaxing color? To me it is one of the most relaxing colors, symbolizing water and sky. Just curious...

Also: What kind of bed frame is that? And where is the rug from?

I understand the idea is a bedroom should be a restful place focused on getting good sleep. But living in one-bedroom apartments means I need somewhere to do desk tasks as well as house my piano and books. Not all of that fits in every rental apartment layout for a living room.

kellybeegee:

Well, regarding colors, blue is a "cool" color and is generally invigorating. I have always preferred "warm" colors that are more womb-like and soothing when in a bedroom situation.

It's also more than just a personal preference thing. Studies have shown that certain colors evoke electromagnetic and chemical responses in our brains. For example (and back to the color we're discussing) blue is the least appetizing color. Diners presented with food on blue plates or in blue restaurants tend to suffer from loss of appetite, poor digestion, and a generally reduced experience than those served in, say, a red or cream restaurant. Similar studies have shown that pink and salmon are calming colors, which is why many hospitals, prisons, rehab centers etc. utilize this color in their decor.

This is probably way more information than you were seeking. :)

Is a flokati really practical in a bedroom...all that fluff and dust and those hard to vacuum skin cells...enough to make me sneeze....ha hah hatchooo....

It's clean and serene without being too minimalist/boring. What a great bedroom! I want to do a white bedroom but was afraid adding a hint of blue would wreck the all white vibe. She does it beautifully. I also like the combo of velvet/flokati/curtain textures. Well done!

The images shown of a couple of bedrooms are very, very nice although not my style, really. In the room w/ the bold graphic going up the wall and across the ceiling would work in a more modern setting just as well as she shows here. She I think thought outside of the perverbial box w/ that graphic design, using it as a headboard and focal point for the bed. It may not work in all cases, but here it works wonderfully.

I'm not a real fan of monochrome color schemes, for starters I do like color, but at the same time know that they are much harder to pull off successfully or otherwise the room ends up as a dull "one color" room devoid of interest. Here she, I the right thing by bringing in hints of a color, say this blue to add that element of interest but yet it doesn't darken the room appreciably at all.

I do think the shag like rug is a good choice for a bedroom, adds textures and warmth at the same time!
