Purple is one of those colors that's very popular right now, but still hasn't totally shaken off its association with psychedelic art and a certain 1980s movie starring Prince. One way to move purple into the 21st century is to pair it with the neutral-of-the-moment, a misty gray.

Pairing a color that's "very popular right now" with a "neutral-of-the-moment" sounds like a singularly unintelligent approach to decoration.
Why wouldn't you just choose colors that you like and will enjoy living with?

Fall'09 has been like a wonderful birthday gift to me: Purple is my favorite color and I am an otherwise neutral/earthtony person.

I find this combo to be boring not inspirational.

oh snap! that's my room! i did a triple take seeing it on the front page. for a second there i didn't recognize it :)
yes, i love purple and gray. i happen to be wearing these colors right now, too. and yes, the combination makes me happy. i didn't contrive to use a neutral and a princely purple - i just find these colors to be insanely good looking and quite soothing!

purple's one of those weird 'brain-hard-wired' colors that you either love or hate... but once the hues are so toned down that it's almost gray-on-gray, they play beautifully with each other. The combo's a little on the feminine side, but I think tweaking it to a darker gray, it makes it feel younger and more graphic, instead of 'muddy'; definitely sexy-as-hell! as well as soothing.
Also, somethings are trends-to-stay, just like last past year's Robyn's egg blue/ Chocolate or Pop o' Yellow on White; we will all keep seeing it, so we might as well get comfortable with it. lol I think most people would feel 'ok' with beige walls, 'cause they're classic, but dammit, it's just fabric and paint... lol Nothing wrong with 'in the moment' decorating.

I love this combination. We just painted our garage a combination of graphite, dark purples and grass greens. The colors work really well together.

I love purple. It's my favorite color. My bedroom is also decorated in purple and gray, but I chose to use deeper shades of purple and gray.

I've been really enjoying rich purple paired with silver lately. Though lovely, these colors are a little light for my taste. I don't know why people get so upset over others' affinity for what may or may not be "trendy" at the moment. I am someone who organically changes her persuasions, and coincidentally, I almost always end up finding out later that it's trending. Purple silver, for example, has been "in" in my world for about a year and a half. Purple for decor is always one of my favorites, though. I just can't imagine why people dislike it! But, I can't understand how people can eat sushi, either, but it's very trendy! Oh, people. You're so wonderfully different.
