It's from the early eighties (which in the world of coffee table interior design books can be a bit scary), yet for the most part the rooms look totally timeless, modern and amazingly UNdated. This revelation leads us to the conclusion that lots of white decor is a good way to go to keep your place looking current for a long stretch of time. A few more photos below the jump...

The unearthly beauty of an all-white scheme--or what is designed to feel like an all-white scheme--is what allows it to still look fresh when the richness of other handsome (but colored) rooms of a particular period begins to pall. Robert Adam's glorious Great Hall at Syon & the House for an Art Lover by Charles Rennie Mackintosh make me want to forswear color completely. Not, of course, that I do.

What do you people say about a white-painted floor? It sure makes for a clean, simple space, but would you have the nerve to make such an irreversible change? Has anyone done this?

I have this book. I pull it out from time to time and revel in white.

Barbara,
I painted my floor white, but it was plywood (I leveled and sanded it first). It looks great. What makes you think painting your floor white is irreversible? Do you mean that painting a wood floor (any colour) is irreversible?
Here is a link that shows you how to create a faux wood plank floor over plywood. Painting over plywood isn't scary, right?

What a coincidence -- I just bought this book last week from a book vendor who sells on the street near my job!
I like it quite a lot , and the price was right. Some of the rooms are a bit sterile or overly artsy for my tastes, but there are plenty of very calm, soothing spaces.

This was my favorite design book in the 80's, when it was given to me as a gift, and I still refer to it. I loved it then and do now.
