Test Your Color IQ

9-12-08colorscore1.jpg

Are you the kind of person who can choose paint colors like nothing else? Do you instinctively know the difference between a warm red and a slightly cooler version? Test your color IQ with this quiz from x-rite. To take the quiz, you have to rearrange a randomly shuffled spectrum of colors by hue...

9-12-08colorscore2.jpg

Although colors vary on different monitors, the test calculates your ability to organize hues in relation to one another on the screen, reducing the interference of monitor discrepancies. A low score is better, with zero being perfect. We scored a 4. Turns out our deficiency lies in the green range. To take the quiz yourself, click here.

I received an 8 on the website.
My best score from a physical test (at a Color Marketing Group conference) was a 2, which is classified as "perfect".

An interesting note for these types of tests; the lower scores are typically in even increments due to the fact that if you miss one color, you naturally have exchanged it with another.... so two colors are out of sequence.

I liked the physical test better because I was working in a light box. Additionally, in the physical test, you only work with one of the four color bars at time which equals fewer distractions for me!

Took it on my MacBook yesterday and got a 26. (Then had to drink a beer to handle the shame.) Tried it this morning on my husband's iMac and got a 12. Evidently, there is some context dependency here - it could be screen, the ambient light, how strained one's eyes are...

Perhaps I'll keep taking it in different contexts until I get a 0.

As a previous Colorist (labdip matcher) and Designer, I've had to take the test with the actual color chips twice (first score as entry level colorist:12. Second score years later:2).
