The Art of Improbable Mish Mash

Cottage Living October 2008

20081027cliving4.jpgD'Ette Cole is an artist, antique dealer, and entrepreneur and, if you think she's full of creativity, you should see her house! Jump down for more pics of this eclectically brilliant abode...

20081027cliving12.jpgOur favorite design moment in D'Ette's cottage is the antique pillar covered with hundreds of good fortunes (see left). The red pushpins flash bright against the white paper and worn wood.

And, speaking of red...

20081027cliving3.jpgD'Ette utilizes one of AT's favorite tactics in the dining room: salon style frames. Here, though, the artwork appears to be made up entirely of family snapshots.

20081027cliving8.jpgBeing a fifth-generation Texan, D'Ette has a soft spot for old cowboy boots. Being an artist and junk shop groupie, she gathers her inspiration with idea boards and small collections of uncommon artifacts.

20081027cliving5.jpgAnother sweet spot in D'Ette's Austin home is actually outside. The spacious back deck is simple but cozy, with a built-in fireplace and overgrown greenery. Akin with D'Ette's unusual tastes, a "bottle tree," or an old French drying rack dressed in Christmas lights, welcomes guests to the party.

Absolutely love it! It takes an incredible amount of skill to make something so eclectic look so coherent and cosy. So very envious!

I love the bottle tree - where do you even find an old drying rack? Although, this is one of those things that I might find delightfully eccentric one moment, and tacky the next.

I like this space - it doesn't scream "Country"

So what's wrong with me? I can see that it is cool and trendy, but I would hate to live in anything like it.

What a great space! The coral living room is so hip and trendy and I always love inspiration boards.

Is the rug in the first photo from Pottery Barn?

JoanneM, there's nothing wrong with you. You recognize that this woman has style, but that it's not your style...that's all.

I love that this is obviously very her. I hope my home looks very much like me someday. (I'm working on it!)
