apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Thomas Smythe's 180 Square Foot Home
Canadian House & Home

Thomas Smyte of HGTV's Sarah's House gives a video tour of his ultra-tiny but very glamorous 180 sq. ft. apartment. A self-described "maximalist", he says that he decorated the small space just as he would if it were a 5 bedroom house...

...complete with chandelier and a displayed collection of loving cups! The dark walls and graphic bedspread are our favorite design decisions, but it's hard to choose - the whole place looks great - check out the 2 minute video presentation right here for the full tour.

Thomas is my favorite part of "Sarah's House". He always has great ideas that Sarah tends to veto in favor of her own. I'm glad to finally see him put his stamp on a very lovely and functional room.

If he can not cook at all and go out to eat all the time, it means he can afford the expenses that come with his tiny space. He probably pays for off site storage too. Why not? - Good for him, etc. etc., but, in this case at least, the tiny space has its (monetary) costs.

I do love Sarah Richardson's style....although I feel that everything of hers turns out fairly spectacular because "money is no object" with most of her clients.

I like it! It is hard for me to imagine living in such a small space, but this is proof positive that a person can live graciously in a tiny abode. It is a luxury to have a choice over where you live, and I think it is a good thing that someone with the luxury of choice chooses something small and functional over something bigger. This is also what I like about AT - showing all kinds of possibilities for spaces that those with more choices and fewer choices can all enjoy and all learn from.

It's very interesting that in this case, the black walls make the space look bigger!

...I couldn't live with black walls; but that's not the point.

with all that fabric and with the rugs, he would need a tiny powerful vacuum

it never says he *doesn't* have a kitchen. He just says he doesn't ever cook at home because it makes everything smell like food. I think there may be a small kitchenette behind those curtains...or at least room for one if he wanted. As for the bathroom...it wasn't mentioned...so who knows.

I think he did a great job in such a small space, and made some great points about decorating such a small space. I especially love the bed-spread!

I love it too. And really, not everyone with a good-sized kitchen cooks. In a city it's pretty easy to get carry-out or relatively affordable pre-made meals that just need heating up. Just because he chooses not to cook doesn't mean he's eating in a four-star restaurant for every meal.

looks like a mini fridge behind the curtain on the video...maybe there's a microwave too. I've lived like that before (thought not so elegantly!). Not tough to eat healthy without a lot of cooking: takeout salads, etc.

I have such a huge crush on him. Cute cute cute. The only critique I have is the oddly scaled pair of lamps; look a bit much in there. That could just be the video though. I love the idea of the kitchen filling in as closet space. I cook maybe three times a year in my house....the kitchen is a waste of space. If Tommy ever wants a fun date in Chicago he should look me up!

I'm bookmarking this right now. What an amazing use of a small space.

I love the space. I think the wall color works great with everything in the room, but I particularly love his "bedding." Does anyone know where it's from?

I hope Sarah's paying him well, and this small space is simply his choice! I'm a big Tommy and Sarah fan... in fact when decorating I often ask "What would Sarah do?" (Answer: have someone paint it a very special shade of off-white, sometimes 2 or 3 times until you get it right.)

I love the black walls! I always wanted to do something dramatic like that in my small space.

I read about this in House and Home (a canadian design mag) and it includes a lot of pics. The kitchen is behind the curtains and is completely functional, he just doesn't like the look of it.
Also, he moved into it while looking for a new home to buy after selling his, and just ended up loving it.

And I thought I was the only one asking myself, "What would Sarah do?" She's the best designer on television, and her and Tommy are hilarious together to boot.

The single sleigh bed as a daybed/sofa in a one room apt reeeeaaalllly works. Must make a note of that
