Midwest #6: The "Cheesy but Strangely Appealing Velvet" Project

Name: Jen
Location: Nashville
Time: 1 Hour
Cost: $4.98!

Jen recovered the "dirty and tattered" old seats of her dining chairs with a rich velvet. Judging from the project title she submitted, she is embracing the kitschy goodness of the "luxe" material. Jump below for all the pics, tools, instructions and VOTING...

BEFORE

Tell us the tools and resources you used for the project:
Fabric remnant, a screwdriver, and a borrowed staple gun.

MY TOOLS

Share step by step instructions for how you completed the project:

1.Turn the chair upside down. Using a screwdriver, remove the seats from the chair.

2. Using the screwdriver, remove the staples that hold the old fabric on the seat. Do not use the wrong end of a hammer or a knife. Trust me, I tried. Hey, there's some really ugly old fabric under here!

3. Measure the seat and cut the fabric to fit. Wrap the fabric around the seat, tuck the corners so they are smooth, and staple the fabric in place. It may be necessary to trim the fabric so it can be stapled smoothly over the corners.

4. Trim, tuck, staple. Repeat. Don't stress about making the underside look perfect; no one can see that part except the cat!

5. Using a screwdriver, reattach the seats to the chairs. Sit on the velvet and enjoy your tea. Mmm, tea.

I loved the original fabric; however, I am not really feeling that new fabric at all. Still, it looks like you did a good job.

I love the velvet, I was considering it for my chair project, because I saw what these folks did with it...

Blue = Good
60s orange stripe = Not so Good

I think I saw the 60s stripe on some chairs at the Salvation Army.

Your chairs look much better now.

Thanks to Mr. Dangerous, Goody, and southof290!

The chairs were a thrift store find, and something stinky happened to the striped fabric before I bought them. So the stripes really HAD to go. It wasn't just a question of aesthetics; it was a question of cleanliness.

The sideboard hutch thing was a craigslist find. It has no maker's mark anywhere. If anyone else knows about it, please let me and Joan know.

The velvet is completely inconsistent with the style of the chair.

Hate that kind of fabric. Nice color, though. I also prefer the look of the original fabric.

Great chairs!

Come on, she lives in Nashville! If you can't have crushed blue velvet there, where can you?

I think the after is much, much better.

I like the original fabric only because of the color, they went well with the wall color.
What is that beautiful wall color by the way?
great job tho, plus you had the help of the lovely kitty.

I notice your cat "helps" you too. I'm painting my bathroom and loo (wc) at the moment but my cats have given the whole project a wide berth. They are really into helping with curtains and upholstery, however.

I dig the chandelier. And the wall color, and the blue velvet.
Maybe it's a southern thang.

How'd you wrangle 2.5 yards of fabric for $4.98?

"Fabric remnant, a screwdriver, and a borrowed staple gun."

And a butter knife, and a cat.

Hee.

madsarah: Exactly. The Nash never takes anything too seriously.

Splomo: Thank you! The fabric came from the remnant bin at Jo-Ann's.

Sassydo, the paint is Benjamin Moore's Merlot.
