Her high-quality shirts and pants lasted for years, and she mixed things up with a combination of real and costume jewelry. Years later, I try to apply the same rule to decorating. High-quality, classic furniture anchors a room, and the rest is "jewelry."
"Room jewelry" can be expensive: a chandelier, artwork for the walls, an antique lamp. Or it can be simple and easy-going: fresh flowers, a warm throw, a cluster of candles. Without the basics a room has no substance, but without the jewelry it lacks soul...
