Kitchen Cabinet Bookcases

We've been looking for new bookcases. We haven't found too many freestanding shelves we like, but we do love the repurposed kitchen cabinet shelving we've seen in a couple of AT House Tours. More below:

Andreas used kitchen cabinets to create a floating credenza in his Greektown loft. We love how the top shelf shows off his favorite books, while the bottom cabinets conceal storage.

Christy and John used kitchen cabinet shelving to make a custom cabinet that runs the length of their entire second floor, from the hallway through the bedroom.

In the hallway, the shelves hold their many books. In the bedroom, the closed cabinets conceal laundry storage. For affordable kitchen cabinet shelving, IKEA is the go-to source, but we're wondering if anyone has other suggestions.

I love what Andreas did - I've though about stealing that to make a credenza of sorts in my dining room...

The problem w/ IKEA cabinets is that unless you're getting white or beech doors, the doors don't match the boxes - One ends up spending a fortune on side panels, shallow countertops, etc. to finish it off and make it look right.

Might as well get better quality cabinets in the first place...

We had the same problem and also went with a kitchen unit. Why is it so hard to find attractive and affordable storage?

I ended up using IKEA TV stands under my windows for my books. They're long and low, can carry a bunch of weight, and they're on wheels to boot. I have a lot of deep books, too, so that works for me... not sure what I'd do with a ton of novels.

Wall cabinets on legs sounds like they could also work, no matter what the source.

Kitchen cabinets are great once you stop thinking about the kitchen. In my old apartment I used a line-up of IKEA upper cabinets along one whole wall to hold everything I owned, since none of it worked with the stripped-down look I was going for. I soon discovered that I couldn't live the minimalist life, but, hey, it was worth a try.
