Using Tiles as Trivets and Coasters

01tile2-27-09.jpg

One of our favorite house tours from the past month was Frances' Light Filled Haven on AT:SF. (If you haven't seen it, make sure to take a look - it's beautiful.) In Frances' kitchen, we noticed this tile that's been repurposed as a coaster/trivet and thought, what a great idea...

Tiles are heat resistant, waterproof, and available in a huge range of color and pattern. Frances, who used to work in a tile showroom, composed her mix and match set of leftovers from a project in the Mission. To start your own tile collection, use showrooms and vintage shops as a resource, or make your own patterned coasters using basic square ceramic tiles.

We've pulled together a few examples of tile trivets and coasters above:
1 Frances' Light-Filled Haven from AT:SF
2 Tile Trivets and Coasters from Images d'Orient
3 Make Your Own Tile Coasters with this Tutorial from Curbly
4 Tile Trivets and Coasters from Images d'Orient
5 Marble Coasters from New Dominion Blues

Make not made, but maybe it is made, now that you don't see new non-solid surface range tops often.

I'd originally meant to say, I grew up using tiles as trivets, so did my best friend. We even have some of the same one's we stole from our mothers.

My sister-in-law ordered NO DIVING tiles like this http://www.inyopools.com/Products/11601349035745.htm
to put in their shower.
She gave me an extra one, and I use it in the kitchen as an odd trivet.

I started doing this a few years ago when I was working at a tile store. It wasn't so much for the design element, as a way to save money. Paying for coasters/trivets vs. free discontinued tiles that are getting thrown out. Great deal!

Tiles are great as trivets. I'm not that impressed with them as coasters. Another thing, I don't have an answer for the burner element covers, although something like a stoneware dish ought to work. I know they make burner covers, but the ones I've seen were tacky and made of metal, like the lid of a tin. I would like to see tile or ceramic versions of this, although I have no need for them. To bring this full circle, I will sometimes take a cool burner off my gas stove and use it as a trivet.
