Urban Artifacts is located on Lincoln Avenue. A small storefront, it was filled to the rafters (literally - see the photo above) with interesting finds when we stopped in last weekend.

We've heard about and have seen some really nice purchases made at the shop from friends, but have not done shopping there ourselves. Rick, one of the proprietors, was manning the shop when we stopped by and was helpful and friendly - we liked what we saw and will be back. Prices were not low, but seemed do-able for the most part if you find a must-have item.

Here are a few more quick pics of current stock:

We loved this king size headboard

There is no web presence, so you'll have to head over in person. Hours are Wed-Sun 1-6, but Rick says if the door is open on Monday or Tuesday, come on in...

Love this place. Rick was very helpful and friendly when Peter and I were there last weekend. We ended up buying a set of four 1970's chairs by Directional, and 2 super cool salt-and-pepper shakers by Tamac, and it was all very affordable. Better prices than other shops that sell pieces of a similar aesthetic. Oh and we almost bought those white caddies you showed in the photo! But we didn't want to splurge too much :)

This is one of my favorite Mid-Century Modern stores in all of Chicagoland. The staff is very friendly and the merchandise is constantly changing. Everything in this store is of the highest quality and in very good condition. I highly reccommend!

Is this a mix of old and new items or only newly produced stock?

Don't pay attention to this "affordable" rating system. If it's in Urban Artifacts, it's a good piece and it's priced reasonably for what you're looking at. These guys have been dealing in modern design since before it was fashionable. There's no pretense, hard sell or snobbiness. It's the best, most consistant store for modern design in Chicago.
