Faux faux bois.
In other words, real birch bark candles. Made with birch bark over paraffin wax (with a protective foil layer), these pillars are so pretty.
They are unscented, so they would work really nicely on the dining table (Thanksgiving?)...all you will be adding to your room is a little natural beauty and candlelight.

Once the candle begins to burn down, what is to keep the bark from catching on fire?!

That would be the protective foil layer mentioned above. C&B wouldn't sell a candle that would easily catch fire. You can find those at the dollar store.
These are so awesome.
Cabin chic is what it's all about for winter 06....makes me want to put on wool socks and an awesome red plaid blanket while I kiss my boyfriend after popcorn and smores!
Also currently at Pottery Barn.
I bought these candles about a month ago. They are very beautiful and burn quiety nicely. C&B candles are cheaper as compared to Pottery Barn (2x the price of C&B).
:)
here check them out in my living room:

Wow, big price difference. Thanks for the tip!
(some slightly different size choices, but you're right about the prices)
Target had to recall some birch bark candles that caught fire (http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml05/05207.html), so not a foolish question
Nice for decor, but be aware that paraffin candles can create poor indoor air quality. These would be great in beeswax instead.
Pottery Barn's birch candles are currently on sale for about 33% off, and with free internet shipping, the price comes out to about the same as Crate & Barrel's candles, which are also currently on backorder online. Pottery Barn website doesn't say if their candles have the foil lining to prevent the bark from catching fire.
