apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Bow Sconces from Octate

0413bow24.jpgWe keep coming back to these wall lamps from Octate. The idea of sconces can get really stale, and designs are often over-the-top or a bit boring. But we think the Bow series includes some of the most interestingly designed sconces out there. Made from multi-ply and thin veneer in maple or walnut, the wood's bow effect creates negative space in the shape of a traditional lamp.

0413bow48.jpg The Bow 24 (named for its shorter height, at 24") and the Bow 48 (at 48") both stand out sculpturally, whether the light is on or not. Cost runs either $235 for the smaller version, and $315 for the larger. We could see these as individual lighting pieces or paired up (possibly even one of each) in a room that needs some commanding objects, wood, and lighting all at once.

I tried one of these once in my apartment - looked great but it doesn't cast much light because it's focused upwards, and the wood "shade" blocks a lot of the light.

Plus, the wood shade is such a thin veneer that it can crack easily.

These are nice, they don't scream 70s cheesy hotel like some do. Nice work finding them.

Chicago AT rocks, you ladies are doing a swell job!
