Good candles are not too hard to come by, we know. Nicely scented ones are pretty easy to find. We're not sure exactly what it is about these that make them so delicious, although it's entirely likely that it is the graphic design of the labels...that font! We just had to blog them.
Created by Harry Slatkin (a home fragrance designer and "candle king" - who knew that was an available job title?), they are formulated with a vegetable wax base and a lead-free wick and come in around 20 scents such as eucalyptus, grapefruit, quince and tuberose.
We saw some super-giant sized ones in hatbox style packages the last time we were in C.O. Bigelow that would make a great gift.
Henri Bendel candles, $28, available at C.O. Bigelow.
The grapefruit vanilla one is my favorite. I looooooove it. They are pricey but last a really long time.
I splurged awhile back on the White Pepper scent. I thought that sounded really fun and it smelled even better, spicy but light. I miss it. I can't even remember how long the candle lasted because I only rememeber the scent.
The font/design/packaging is rather perfect.
I bought my Mom the jasmine scented one for Mother's day and she's still telling me how much she loves it!
FIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I concur. FIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh god. the lemon verbena is fantastic. expensive. and fantastic.
I bought the Amber because it smelled so good in the store, and the box was my favorite color. But at home when it burn it, it just stinks. Smells like cheap cologne and gives me a headache. Beware.
Hottest fragrance of them all: Firewood (pun intended. but seriously, it smells like a sexy outdoorsy MAN.)
what is the font? is it papyrus?
anyone?
thanks.
They are truly fantastic candles. I've been addicted for more than a year. Love the lavender and quince. They're also available at Bath & Body Works and bathandbodyworks.com (for $26). If you ever stumble into a BBW flagship store, highly recommend the 3-wick, $50 versions as well.
Tuberose is the best!!!
i think the font may possibly be one of the older 'emigre' fonts...it is not Papyrus...
$28 for a candle? i don't care how good it smells give me Glade for $5 anyday.
The awesome folks at typophile.com identified the typeface as being close to Perla from T-26.
Here's the thread: http://typophile.com/node/8237
The typophiles also seem to agree that it most likely custom handlettering. See a followup thread: http://typophile.com/node/9824
These candles are also available at 'Bath and Body Works', where, on occasion, they go on sale.. I picked mine up at 50% off!
I agree that $28 is too much to pay for a candle; that is why I think they make great gifts. I love giving and receiving gifts that are less practical or more of a splurge than one would afford for themselves.
I got mine as a wedding gift (part of a basket) and I love it.
These are the best in the world and totally worth every penny!!!! They are less expensive than Diptique which were the best until these came out (and easier to come by). Firewood and Fig are to die for and they last forever! To Sally: Glade, eat your heart out! Who wants some nasty spray when you can have the elegance of a Henri Bendel candle? The glow put off by the candles is amazing too! Looking forward to the new scents he will create over time! These are excellent christmas gifts!!!
I LOVE the amber scent! It never fails to relax and and put me in my happy place. Make the entire house smell sexy. I love them at any price
I love just about all of the scents. They put me in touch with nature, and the spirituality that aromatherapy brings. Believe me after a hard day's work, there's nothing like a beautiful scent to bring earthiness to the soul.
I love fig!!!!!!!!
But I've been told the line is being discontinued at BBW in Boston, Ma.
I LOVE the VANILLA BEAN, OMG-- people can smell it when i dont even have it lit!! I pick some up everytime I drive through Nashville, since Bath & Body Works no longer carries them (they switched to Slatkin), and I can't seem to find a White Barn around here. I guess I have to shop online from now on.

Fear not Henri lovers, these candles are not discontinued at Bath & Body or White Barn! How do I know? I work at a White Barn store and we just received word from the company as to what is going on with the line. We own the brand (We are owned by limited brands and limited brands own's Henri Bendel. Some of you who have shopped at White Barn for years may actually remember before these were "Henri Bendel" candles they were actually a White Barn brand.) and the company has decided to make some changes. As uownonann stated, we have switched our Fragrance products to the Slatkin & Co. name (another company we bought and probably one of the smartest things Lex Wexner ever bought.), you'll see lots of products over the next year rebranded as Slatkin & Co. The company had planned a relaunch of the Henri Bendel filled candle in the fall of 2008. So to start moving inventory in the June Semi-Annual sale they put them on sale for $10. Well they frankly didn't expect it to be such a HUGE success and we pretty much blew thru the inventory of them. So if you go to your local Bath & Body or White Barn and don't see them, that's why. They did tell us that select stores would receive replenishment on these during Christmas. They didn't specify which stores but I can about promise you it will only be high volume stores and/or stores that traditionally have sold the most Henri Bendel's. My store just got a shipment in the other day of a few, so hopefully that means my store is a "select" store. My advice if your hunting for them is to either buy online, or call Bath & Body Customer Service at 1-800-756-5005. Tell them you are trying to track down your favorite scent and see if they can help you. I've had customers call before and say they are from some other part of the country and customer service told them based on the inventory data that your store has a stock of "xxxx". If you can find a store that does have your scent they can take your order over the phone from the store and have it shipped to you. Hope that helps! And if anyone sees a Lavender Leaves out there at their local store, know I envy you! (I burned my last one. :(
