IKEA LERAN Pendant Lamp

2007-08-13-lamp.jpgWe went to IKEA a few weekends ago (to check out the Kulla lamp, which we liked much more in white than the red we blogged originally) and flipped over the LERAN pendant in the super size (24", $89.99).

The scale of the lamp is the key to what makes it so interesting. It really is impressively oversize in person and is somewhat reminiscent of the really big Noguchi paper lanterns - it has the same combination of natural materials and giant scale.

Priced well for a green "chandelier alternative", the Leran is handwoven from bamboo and rattan with a natural palm oil finish.

We know its only a matter of time until we see one of these over a Saarinen tulip table...

Available (in store only) at IKEA.

I saw this on my last IKEA run and almost bought it. Loved the scale, the natural materials. Sadly, my bf hated it and made one of those "seriously? are you kidding me? do I even know you?" faces. I knew I was right.

Wow -- I *love* the scale and the shape, but I'm not as crazy about the material. I wonder how it would look spray-painted (I'm afraid like something in a suburban sun room) or if it would possible to somehow hack the frame and use fabric to make it more mod. I was just complaining this very day about the lack of good huge pendant lamps -- I see an exploratory mission to Ikea in my future.

I grew up in the Middle East, in the United Arab Emirates, where my parents still work. They get 45 days paid vacation days per year. Which is why I'm moving right back when I'm done with university!
