Double-Duty Designs from BoConcept

A while ago, AT Editor Heather and I got a sneak peek of the new BoConcept store in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Since they're now officially open, we thought we'd share some of the store's double-duty items including sleeper sofas, multipurpose coffee tables, and hidden home offices. Our favorite piece is the one shown at top, a twin bed/bench that folds into an ottoman...

Starting at $499 (the price goes up depending on the fabric), this sleeper ottoman comes slip-covered in the pattern of your choice.

Design Consultant Paul showed us how to flip the frame from an ottoman to a bed.

The joints are easy to work with - it doesn't take much elbow grease.

Cushions are attached to the frame so they stay in place as you open up the sides.

The open piece works as a twin bed or a cushioned bench.

We tried it out - it's pretty comfy. Perfect for overnight guests.

This Sofa Bed starts at $949. The back of the sofa hides two zippered compartments with fold-up legs. When you convert the sofa to a bed, the extra legs provide stability.

This Largo Sectional starts at $2,600. The pieces can be broken apart into chairs or positioned together as a sofa.

The Lecco shelving system can be customized into cabinets, bookshelves, or a hidden home office. This configuration shows a flip-top desk that lets you hide all the mess when you're done for the day.

The Functional Coffee Tables contain pop-up panels that can hide remote controls during the day and transform into a TV tray at night. This one starts at $999.

A simpler version of the Functional Coffee Table starts at $899 and fits more easily in a small space. For more information on Chicago's new BoConcept store, click here. To see the online catalog, click here.

Thanks to Francisco, Paul, and the BoConcept team for showing us around!

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the BoCo. We have a store here in FL, and some of the pieces, while attractive (yay sleeper ottoman! how useful/cool is that?), are of IKEA-esque quality, at Room Board prices.

YMMV.

But I still like that ottoman.

Yikes. That should be Room *and* Board.

I was rather unimpressed with the quality of the "Functional Coffee Table" when I tried it at a BoConcept store. The way the hinged tables slam shut, I'd be worried about losing my fingers. Similarly, while somewhat nicer to look at, the sliding doors on the wardrobes I tried seemed stickier than the ones on Ikea PAX wardrobes. I would definitely want to look at things in person before ordering.

Whenever a post about BoConcept goes up, the negative comments start rolling in.

Clearly this company and the products sold musn't be that remarkable for grievances to be continuously aired.

Agree with the quality assessment. Love the sleeper ottoman, though. Wonder how long before IKEA knocks it off for half the price?

I only discovered BoConcept yesterday. I'm surprised to hear from other posters that the pieces are of poor quality (yikes, comparing it to Ikea is not good news!!). The website is impressive and the photos are nice -- and the pieces are not exactly cheap. It's too bad. I think I will go take a look this weekend.

I agree. The furniture looks nice in photos, but in person it's flimsy and made out of cheap particle board (I think) with cheap looking veneer. I can't believe they are selling Ikea quality furniture at Room and Board/Crate and Barrel prices! I personally, was very disappointed.

The furniture looks nice. Does anyone know whether it's made of sustainable materials and fabrics?
