Smith and Hawken is housed in an amazing old building.
The big brick shop on North Kingsbury is such a cool space. The interior is great, with double height ceilings and soaring industrial windows. It is perfect for a garden shop - the spaciousness mimics the outdoors. Full gazebos and multiple patio settings are housed inside, with room to spare.
We stopped in today and were surprised at how few plants are available, compared to visits we've made in the past. It really is almost all outdoor furniture and accessories, with some gardening goods mixed throughout.
We like the firepits. We always do, from anywhere; just the idea of them.
The arches and trellises are interesting. It's nice to think of an overgrown garden with one of these as a centerpiece.
Our favorite: the flatware with bamboo resin handles (on sale for $39.20) - we used to have a set like this have always thought that it is so summery and kind of retro/tiki/fun.
The quality of the outdoor furniture options seems high, but not wildly varied in style so if you like the Smith & Hawken look, you're in luck, but if not....
Sales were on throughout the shop, and there is a small outlet (entrance on the west side of the building) with extra good prices.
great building.....poor assortment, horrible service.
I'd have to echo what hdtex stated.
For a home and garden store, they sure don't have much selection.....especially in terms of things to plant in your garden.
I haven't been to this location, which looks beautiful, but I did find out recently that the entire company is now owned by Scott's, the maker of Miracle-Gro plant food and Turf Builder fertilizer. Although it's been some time since Paul Hawken was running the place (Scott's bought it from another investment company), I think this change has brought about some of the less desirable changes in service, etc. of the stores. I've simply noticed a less interesting product assortment and the funky, Northern California vibe is gone.
