Desire To Inspire: Kim's Amazing DIY Couch!

We have always had a thing for people who fall into the category of, "Go big or go home." And coming off the February Jumpstart Project it's been great to see the wide array of diy adventures we've had, but our hats are officially tipped to Kim from Desire to Inspire as she not only tackled the making of her own couch, but she tackled making one that's as versatile as it is comfortable. Click through for the low down on how two people with limited carpentry skills, took on the seemingly impossible!

Kim's was in the market for a new sofa. She was no longer in love with her old one and was on the look out for something more "loungey." In her searching she encountered what most of us do, the reality that our pocketbooks don't usually suit our tastes. Everything that was super loungey and comfortable was out of her price range and everything that was in her price range was less than relaxing. Here's what Kim had to say about her adventures in sofa making...

"Since I wanted something low and loungey, I figured the easiest way to get what I wanted would be to get some cushions, and basically build boxes for them. Instead of buying foam for the cushions, I went to Ikea and bought cushions from one of their sofas where they were sold separately from the frame. There were 4 cushions - 2 for the base and 2 narrower ones for the back. So working with that we built one main base that houses the 2 larger cushions and an individual base for each of the narrower ones.
We used rounded fence post toppers for the feet of the main section (I have pieces of furniture pads underneath them in the photos because it weighs a ton and I'm worried it's going to dent the floor), and casters for the feet of the 2 smaller sections. This way the smaller pieces could be wheeled around the living room to accommodate different seating arrangements. Because I wanted a pile of pillows along the back of the main section and I was concerned they would take up too much space, we built a ledge along the back to house the majority of the pillows, leaving ample room for sprawling."

Kim purchased covers for the cushions from IKEA, although they have become cat hair magnets and she has since began the hunt for fabric to make her own. She's also in the market for new mis-matchy pillows to cover the back, she's leaning towards neutrals with a few jewel tones thrown in for fun! You can see this and more of her wonderful creations over at Desire To Inspire.

Thanks Kim!

It's AWESOME! I love it. Creative, and 'loungey' for sure! Great way to have something unique and affordable. My question: how do you keep the mobile pieces from rolling away from the base, (for example if you used it for a bed)?

Absolutely love it!

Neato! I do hope those are slipcovers -- white is not exactly very compatible with a feline family. I would nix the tiny, shallow coffee tables though. Of course I assume that is projecto #2!!

I wonder how much this all cost? It looks amazing, though!

Thanks everyone! The mobile pieces have lockable casters, and they're placed horizontally so won't roll out when placed at the end of the base. There's probably 5 cats in the photo - I have 6. The small tables are all that will fit - the room (well, the whole house) is tiny. And the cost was about $600. Could have been less if we had of bought used casters and thinner/cheaper wood (they're REALLY heavy).

i absolutely LOVE this couch and have said so on the lovely desire to inspire's blog. I have a question for AT readers though. I would love to do something similar but have very limited funds and absolutely no knowledge or carpentary or any tools!

I was thinking that something similar might be acheivable using the EINA bed frame from ikea as the box? http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/70120594

I'm wondering if anyone can see why this might not work and if they have any other suggestions?

thanks!!
sure it'll work emmalee. my original plan was to use a twin (or as small as possible) mattress and frame. fill the back with pillows and no one will know it's a bed.

I did that! Using the Ikea Eina that is. Used their sultan mattress too. If you use the mattress, you'll have to put foam or batting around it or on top so you don't show the ribbing that is in the mattress. I covered it with fabric (you want to use pretty sturdy fabric or upholstery fabric) and put a bunch of pillows on top. You want to have the mattress high enough so that when you sit down you don't feel the edge of the bed. Very comfy and cozy, and a guest bed too, but it does still look a bit like a bed. Partially because of how the legs are positioned maybe, and the finish of the Eina. But there is plenty you could do about that - paint, cover with fabric, contact paper, etc. I'm thinking of eventually using a platform bed instead. That way it will also be easier to have two and put them next to each other (at a right angle).

Wow, brilliant idea! There are so many uses for this and so many combination. It would be so useful to have guests over and seems easy to maneuver... Love the choice of colours and patterns for the pillows!

Brilliant! I love the tulip side table. I've been looking for exactly that table. Anyone know where it's from? Does anyone have a good source for less expensive tulip table bases? I'm trying to find a cafe height table.

The table was made years ago by (I think) an Italian relative of mine who worked with marble so unfortunately I have no source. I wish I knew where he got the base - it's really rusty because my parents had it in their backyard before I scammed it. It's a weird height though - not tall enough to eat at, and too tall for a coffee table.

thanks so much for your help guys! i was thinking of getting a thiner mattress for the bottom of the bed to boost up some pillows like desire to inspire used. i do have two fear that have been mentioned 1) it not being high enough so you feel the edge of the bed 2) it looking too much like a bed!

i'm glad to know that someone else has tried this though and can't wait to get started.

much love x0

The lamp is vintage, from a thrift shop. I paid maybe $10 for it.

Wow! We JUST did the same thing last weekend. We haven't had time to find the proper cushions, etc for photography, but it is basically the same concept. Internet Hive Mind strikes again.

Also, white can be surprisingly animal friendly, as it is the only color that can be bleached.

I love it! I've been thinking of building a sofa to replace the one I have. You've inspired me to build a sectional now. Thanks!

this is FABULOUS and I must do it. The search for a couch has STOPPED and my working hands shall begin! But first... please tell where you got the cushions, and how much did you spend? I love love love your home.

I'm really late answering the last comment but the cushions are from Ikea's Lillberg sofabed. The cushions with covers were $120 CDN, and the sofa cost a few hundred in supplies. Thanks!

What type of wood did you use or would recommend? Is that were you incurred most of the cost?

I would try to buy the lightest but sturdiest wood you can find because the main sofa ended up weighing ALOT. We did return some wood and went with MDF for the sides because MDF is very straight and is great for furniture. The wood was the biggest cost (and the casters aren't cheap), but now I have to buy pillows for the back and fabric, so there's another potentially hefty cost. Still WAY cheaper than buying a sectional sofa.
