We once had an apartment with beautiful bay windows, which we still miss. Like an alcove or a nook, bay windows can help to section off a room, making them the perfect spot for a reading chair, a desk, or anything you want to designate as its own space...
- 1) William and William use their bay window as a seating area, complete with matching chairs and side tables.
- 2) In Jennifer's Inner Sunset Retreat, a bay window defines the dining area. What a great place to eat breakfast!
- 3) A wraparound bench transforms this bay window from Summer and Josh's Pumped Up Traditional home into the ultimate hang-out spot.
- 4) This bay of windows from Gehry and Lanya's home creates the perfect bed nook. You might not immediately think of placing a bed by a bay window, but lots of natural light can definitely make mornings more enjoyable.
- 5) Gingerpop's bay window anchors her living room sofa, making it the focal point of the room.

Wow, I would love to be able to put up window treatments over our bay windows like in the first image!
We used to have our dining table in front of the windows, but I didn't think it was the best use of space. Instead, I moved an IKEA bookshelf to our window to create my own little reading/seating nook. The bookshelf doubles as a bench.

Wow! My parents had the exact same living room curtains, c. 1973 -- and a red/pink colourway in the bedroom.

Only 1 and 3 are successful designs. I've yet to see a great window treatment idea for these wonderful/difficult spaces. That would be a great posting.

My problem is actually the start of my private porch. The space is awkwardly shaped, like a bay window. But I don't want to put anything there because then I'd be blocking the sliding door. It bothers me to no end and feels like wasted space.

We rent a house with a bay window that has a built-in bench. The top of the bench is unfinished and very unattractive. A previous tenant upholstered a cushion to cover it, but I would like to use the space for houseplants. I thought about covering the top of the bench with oilcloth or a tasteful piece of laminate flooring for easy cleanup in case of spills. Has anyone else taken on a similar project? Any other ideas on how to finish the top of the bench to accommodate lots of plants?
