DIY Plaster Flowers

5-27-08look4.jpg

We noticed this clever DIY project at a friend's house over the weekend. These sculptural white flowers were made from real plants dipped in plaster. Click below to find out how to make your own...

Step 1: Gather a batch of interesting-looking flowers (grab more than you think you need in case they break during the process).

Step 2: Mix a batch of plaster in a bucket or tub. Dip the flowers in the plaster to coat them. Lay them out to dry.

Step 3: After the flowers are dry, coat them with a layer of spray paint to set the plaster.

Thanks to Natalie for giving us her DIY plaster flower method!

Interesting idea and well executed but I find these a bit morbid. They're like flowers that looked at Medusa.

Maybe if you sprayed them a color, they might be more cheerful.

what happens to the flowers inside the plaster? do they dry out or rot?

My only thought is: why.

I'm surprised the plaster doesn't smoosh the petals up, or make everything droop.

I'd also wonder if the rotting plant matter inside them wouldn't get awfully disgusting and smelly.

Hmmmm..this might be a fun way to simulate one of those sculptural corals. *note to self*

It works better with rather ugly old plastic flowers from yard sales. But "Why?" is still a fair question.

Against a dark colored wall these might look nice, no?

Why? Because they are beautiful and unique. Slightly morbid? Maybe, but in a first cold snap of winter freezing the world sort of way. I love them.
