The faux-antler revival might be so 2005, or just plain off the style mark for many. While we've read some strong opinions on other blogs about the whole antler/deer head design thing, we'd like to know what AT: Chicago readers have to say on the subject. Hot or not?
We reached our own breaking point and grew tired of seeing the trend everywhere last winter. Then we were out on one of our regular thrifting excursions yesterday and spotted this little guy (approx. 7" high and 4" across) and went for it. For $1.50, we're game...

I know we have seen these over and over and over again...but I love them. Only if they are gloss/matte white or clear.
I still haev yet to actually see on in person.
love it!
i've had my white wooden deer head for a few years and it still makes me smile. the key, i think, is to paint it the same color as your walls to get that "Ghost Antler" effect.
It's definitely not my bag, but I think it might be cool in an uber-modern space -- I'm envisioning one that's bathed in white with bright-colored accents. The folksy-ness/woodsy-ness would provide tongue-in-cheek counterpoint, but the white finish ensures it won't look completely misplaced.
I started digging antler/deer head decor about 3 years ago--since i liked it. i didn't think i was advance of any trend curve. so now i have a few deer-head things and i'm sick of seeing them everywhere! the only one i'm still super-fond of is the taxidermy armature for a head (papier-mache, no antlers or ears, smoothed-out)...the other ones might go back on ebay. sigh.
That pic makes it look like he's got a little sneaky smile on his deer face. I like it. God is in the details.
I LOVE IT in white. And I can imagine a world in which I might kind of like it as-was.
I love the whole quasi-taxidermy theme, but I'm not so crazy about the Paint Detailed Objects Stark White craze. To me, these white objects, along with silhouette-detailed graphics, self-conscious chandeliers, and certain shades of teal/aqua blue and kelly green, are of the moment, not classics. And I've got a nagging feeling that little plaster head might have been worth more than $1.50 as a vintage item before it got over-painted in white.
I think I liked it better before the white, but in either case, I'd hang it up at Christmas and hang ornaments from the points.
this is exactly the kind of thing i think SHOULD be painted white if you're doing that ultra-hip paint-it-white thing. it cost $1.50. it's not a priceless antique. it's not of obvious quality. it could theoretically have some resale value, but only in the sense of those hideous Williamsburg 'eames era' highway robbery vintage furniture places (you know, the ones that sell ashtrays from the Pan-Am first class lounge for $50 because some trustafarian doesn't know you can get them on ebay for a tenth of that). when the paint-it-white thing goes out of style, you can get rid of it without guilt.
when one really good product design enters the market, it will have its fifteen minutes then inevitably get beaten to death by the copycats. so what can you do...on to the next "new" thing, i guess. i saw some deer antlers on a dining table in a home design mag and i loved it and hated it at the same time. oh the ambivalence.
This is so funny. I did the EXACT same thing. My husband thought I was nuts. I should photograph it and put it on flickr.
And here I thought I was all original. ;)
okay . . .first off, i'm glad this is NOT a real deer head. those scare the bejesus outta me. but as far as kitsch goes, i LOVE it. the white is awesome. i think any solid color would look super pop-art fantastic. i took a plaster bust of David and painted it metallic red. from neo-Classical cliche to Warhol pop masterpiece. if you love it, DO IT!!!
Thumbs up from me
For $1.50 who cares? The question is, why NOT?
LOVE IT!
For my money, the Science and Sons "plastidermy" deer head is still the best, but then again only spending $1.50 would leave a lot of that money left over for other things...
