Look! Wooden Ceiling Treatment

063009-woodenceiling.jpg Our new place has a few surprises within it's walls, a major one lies inside the smallest space in the place. The bathroom. Check out the funky treatment that has been done by a previous tenant, it's been the highlight of conversation for all that have visited us so far. But wait, this bathroom has one more oddity, check it out after the jump...

063009-housenumbers.jpg House numbers! We didn't notice these numbers when we were first checking into the place and were a small surprise once we started spending more time there! (Which is our graceful way of saying, we didn't see it until we used the bathroom).

The ceiling brings a great deal of warmth to a space which has a sealed concrete floor and a concrete pillar in it. The wall color we're not 100% sold on yet, but we're hoping it will grow on us!

Would you ever do something this drastic in your own home? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

I like the treatment but I'm not sure about the color. I think something more natural looking to complement the wood and the concrete floor would work better.

While i think the color is CRAZY I'm not sure how i would go about re-painting as the color looks like it predated the ceiling. I bet the ceiling is awesome for sound deadening.

I agree with JeffC. A more neutral wall would make the ceiling look even more impressive. The bold walls are too distracting.

how cool! that's actually our old place -- ! we sold it last summer and heard it was available for rent now! :)
as a backstory on the bathroom -- we intended for the room to have sort of a ship feeling. there was a big antique print of a ship on stormy waters on the wall next to the toilet ... hence the blue.
the 1027 is sort of an homage to my first date with my husband. that loft was a h.u.g.e labor of love for us and we're romantic like that.

enjoy your new space, sarah rae! i hope you love it as much as we did!
(and you can be happy we took the noisy feral cat with us when we moved! :)

I agree, the ceiling is amazing, but the wall color should be more natural in color. Perhaps a buckskin or a medium brown.

too funny that the creator of the room actually saw this posting!

the ceiling is fab. I agree with others (sorry Kimberly!) that I would prefer a much more muted earth tone on the walls. The wood ceiling is really genius, though. I wouldn't touch it!

That's so cool that the former owner is on AT! Small World!

Kimberly, I'd love to see a tour of your current place, since you have so much imagination!!

tam, we actually moved into a house where most of the work had already been done by the previous owner ... i think it would pale in comparison to the thought and love we put into this loft! thank you for the compliment, though!

kimberly - Your efforts in the space are amazing! Thanks so much for all your hard work. I'm sure you'll see more of the space here on AT in the next few weeks!

I'd love to hear more about how you did some of the treatments, if you wanted to send me an email: sarahraeat@gmail.com
Thanks!

They did this treatment on an episode of Trading Spaces once, back in the day, when it was good. I can't remember if they did a wall or a ceiling, but it was the same basic idea using different heights of wooden blocks to cover a surface.

Trading Spaces was never good, not in anyone's "day".

It was fun in an OMG sort of way.

Ooo, dumping on Trading Spaces. Whilst pet sitting for some cabled friends, I saw an episode where a designer created a living room out of gray and black camouflage, including a giant parachute in the midst of this. Maybe on the ceiling. It was hideous. What was particularly depressing was that the family lived on a freaking Army base!!!! Like they didn't already get enough camo every single day. The homeowner was distraught. No kidding.

I love it too, and it's actually very similar to an idea I pounced upon just tonight.

How did you do it, Kimberly? Did you glue the blocks up or nail or both? How thick are the cuts of wood? How did they stand up to the moisture of the bathroom (they look like they aged very nicely)? Did you use teak or similar?

Thanks!!

Very nice, thank you.

For reference, here is the Trading Spaces room that had a similar treatment: http://www.noceilingfans.com/s2e24.html

I think the wood is nice, but if it were mine, I would silver leaf the blocks. (Prime with white or gray first...) Gold would be a bit too much, but silver with white walls and crystal accessories -- wow!
