Look! Built-In Closet by the Fireplace

4-8-08look2.jpg

Our friend Mike's bedroom has a fireplace (we're so jealous!) but no closet space. To make up for the lack of storage, he modified the built-in cabinets that flank the hearth...

He took out the shelves inside the cabinets and replaced them with a clothes rod. Now he keeps all his sweaters, jackets, and shirts hanging next to the fireplace - a clever way to create clothes storage.

Does that mean his clothes are warmed if he has the fire on? Even "cooler"!!!!!!!!!

That's so awesome! Good thinkin' Mike! I covet your bedroom fireplace, btw. That's just too neat!

i'm really liking this trend toward creating custom closets in formerly-overlooked nooks. i am a big fan of rethinking the space alloted you in your home.

one of my favorite pictures ever on AT was from a house tour where the tenant moved her bed into her high-ceilinged closet. it fit like a glove and her new 'bedroom' was perfection.

i'd love to see more posts devoted to transforming closets into other 'rooms' and to showing seldom-thought of storage solutions in other parts of the home.
