Look! Go-Go Gadget Sun Shade Windows

While cruising through downtown Kansas City last week, we happened to catch a glimpse of this home off I-35S. Having been in the area again this weekend we noticed something different about the home's appearance. Click through the jump to see the new photo taken this weekend of the robot-esque staircase that lives inside this house.

After driving past this house the first time around, the staircase just amazed us. We loved how the stairs were literally floating against the large window panes. Jokingly we thought about how a trek to get a glass of milk in the middle of the night, could involve a bit more than just a robe (depending on how much you like your neighbors!).
This time around we noticed the windows happened to be "closed" by giant metal plates. They slide closed to block out the setting sun, or a wild rumpus that could be happening behind the glass.
Several questions immediately came to mind.... Where did such large metal pieces go when they weren't in use? How much energy does it take to close such a contraption? What happens if a finger gets caught in one? Is there a safety switch on them like your garage door? And most importantly.... where can one be purchased!? Although it probably helps to have the home to go with it.... we can dream can't we?

How do you know that they're metal plates?

They look to be solar shades to me.

That's one looong solar shade, but that makes the most sense.

Not a bad looking house, either. Another one that could probably only be built on the West Side. Although I do miss that C-shaped white house that was on Jefferson for as long as I can remember...

Anyone know who the architect is?
