Look! Historic Frank Lloyd Wright Home in Rogers Park

This Frank Lloyd Wright home, the Bach House, is just a few blocks away from us. That means, like a lot of things right under our noses, it took a while before we even noticed it. But the dozens of tulips out front are really helping everyone in the neighborhood take notice now.

The landmark 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom house at 7415 N. Sheridan was designed for Chicago brick manufacturer Emil Bach in 1915. Last spring, it was auctioned off, the second Wright home to ever make it to auction. Read more information and stats on the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Market site, and read more about the auction below:

Taken from a thread on the Wright Chat site, here's an excerpt from the Chicago Tribune, published March 9, 2005:

A Frank Lloyd Wright house in Chicago's Rogers Park community was sold at auction Tuesday in eight minutes, after failing to attract a buyer for more than a year.

Frank Diliberto, senior vice president of the Oak Brook-based Inland Real Estate Group, which handled the auction, refused to identify the buyer or the winning bid, but said it was several hundred thousand dollars above the opening bid of $750,000.

About 200 prospective home buyers had toured the 4-bedroom, 3 1/2 bath house at 7415 N. Sheridan Rd.

The winning bidder is not a developer and plans to live in the house, Diliberto said. The new owner does not have plans to develop an adjacent yard, he added.

Possible development of the yard drew ire from Frank Lloyd Wright preservationists who argued any new structure on the property would alter the architect's design.

In February, Ald. Joe Moore (49th) proposed a city ordinance to rezone the property from multifamily housing to single-family homes.

"In this case the plan of the buyer seems to meet perfectly with the desires of the community, which is preservation," Diliberto said.

Wow! How absolutely gorgeous! The tulips, along with the fence in the last picture provide great framing for this home. Along with Eichlar, he is one of my favorite architects. Thanks Heather!

Hey, I live about 3 blocks from there: Heather, you are my neighbor!

marissa,
hi neighbor! i used to think that i was so far removed when i moved to rogers park last year...and now many friends are moving here or i'm meeting people that already live here. i'm growing to love it. what are your thoughts on RP? are you a longtime resident? i have a friend who is thinking of moving to sheridan/jonquil, but is concerned about safety. any thoughts? (i've never felt any more unsafe here than any other place in the city, to be honest...)

Heather,
I've lived in RP for about 4 years: on Greenleaf and Paulina, Howard and the lake, and now just purchased on Birchwood near the lake.
I find it restful and real, and thankfully uncongested, especially in comparison to more trendy, popular, and commercial neigborhoods -- I lived in Lakeview for too long!
My good friend lives at Sheridan and Jonquil in the building with the duplexes. I was influenced by her experience to buy here. I have not had any crime committed against me or my property, not ever. I can't say, however, that the neighborhood isn't weird: too much trash on the ground (once I a found bag of syringes); last week right around the corner I saw a hooker turning tricks 7AM Sunday (so obvious I thought it was a police sting). . . And I don't walk around much without my "kryptonite," my dog.
On another front: be sure to check out the DWR warehouse sale. It is excellent. My friend (with money) bought $10,000 worth of furniture for $2600; I got a Mies Brno chair (slightly imperfect) for $100. Two floors of merchandise, and the prices drop, I'm told, every day.
The Tabula Tua sale, on the other hand, is not that great.

Oh forgot to add -- you're doing a great job with this site, Heather. Thanks so much for the Chicago edition.

I am so excited by the emergence of Chicago Apartment Therapy, just as I myself have moved to town... and to Rogers Park as well! It seems like RP is a hot area for new apartments & condos. Thanks also for the realistic, but positive neighborhood review. And I concurr on the great job for the Chicago AT!
