Look!: Homebrew Baby Safety Gate

090706babygate2.jpg

AT New York slinked it, and now we're sharing it with Chicago. Readers Joel and Maria, designers in Miami, shared this homemade, custom baby gate with us recently. There's already a thread going over at Blue Ant Studio. They say:

Using regular 1x2 poplar wood slabs that you can get at the local Home Depot and some nails/screws and a latch from an outside patio door, I was able to fashion a not so hideous device that swings open like a dream...

Questions have unfolded surrounding the design and safety features, so if this is a topic of interest, chime in!

We'll be checking in with Joel and Maria regularly as they blog modern design (not just kid stuff) from Miami.

This is fantastic looking, so much better than those plastic gates. And it would be good for people with pets too.

Thanks guys!

We have to come up with this in order to try to match our decor. I resembles the Nelson bench construction but with open ends for the slabs. The back has a 1/8" plexiglass panel to avoid climbing and the latch is a very secure outdoor grade latch that has been baby proofed and still easy to use while going up the stairs with baby on arms. Another poster made the reference in regards of using it as a pet gate. I'm trying to figure it out how to make a sliding one. The only thing missing is the expander to get between a gap and secure it but the look is almost the same.

Thanks again and keep your eyes open for more DIY's:

Prouve legs+Nelson top table
Prove Legs+Glass top table
Grape Lamp sconce (based on the DNA lamp!)
Nelson-ish outdoor bench
Nelson asterisk clock made of cardboard
Prouve Potence pivoting lamp
Platform floating planter

and more... all done with simple tools and from HomeDepot supplies!!!

regards,

Joel+Maria Pirela
