We took a trip to our local Kansas City, Re-Store yesterday and once the rain cleared, we ventured outside of the building only to find these beautiful stone slabs. There were 100+ pieces of quite usable marble and granite and you won't believe the price tags on them...
Most the pieces in the lot ranged from $14-$100 per slab, although most of them fell under the $40 mark. They ranged in size from 15ft in length down to 2ft, some were countertop depth and others would be perfect for the top of a large kitchen island countertop.
Make sure to keep tabs on your local Re-Store as good change daily and some of the best deals in town can be had!

Remnants are a great thing. I had 4 new vanity tops made from two remnant slabs this past fall. The pieces were free, all I paid for was the cutting!

This is really a nice feature, in which buyers would have the idea that there are still slabs that are not so expensive, in which they could use for making houses and others.

there are several places in Chicago to get slabs like this. Tile Outlet has some big ones. But if you search on granite and stone you should find a few places.
The trickier part is transporting them and getting someone to cut and finish them so that you still save money.
I picked a nice slab out of the garbage while I was in my last apartment and it fit perfectly on top of a rolling metro shelf cart making a nice little island.
If you are going to get a slab to use on your countertop I would recommend gluing some rubber feet on the bottom so that there is some clearance for easy picking up and so no liquids get trapped in between the stone and the countertop.

I believe there is a similar store on of Route 31 in Elgin, and another somewhere in Lake County. I'm not sure if they carry stuff like this, but you might also try Salvage One.

in the DC area you can find lots of slabs like this at Community Forklift in Hyattsville, and at Rebuild in Springfield off Industrial Drive. at Rebuild there is a granite fabricator down the way that will pick up from the store and cut it, then make arrangements to install at your home.

almost any tile or stone store will have remnants laying around. usually because they don't want to pay to dump them. i have picked up quite a few over the years. they make great cutting boards & table tops for small tables. i would definately put feet on them if they are for cutting boards. good idea art. lots of times they will just give them to you, if you pay to have them cut, or the edges finished. but usually they are quite cheap, if you do have to pay for them at all. paying them to do the finishing & cutting seems to be win-win. you get what you need cheap, they make a little money, and nothing ends up in the dumpster.
